Men initiate sex more than three times as often as women do in a long-term, heterosexual relationship. However, previous research shows that sex happens far more often whenever the woman takes the initiative, suggesting that it is the woman who thus sets the limits to a greater extent than men do.
Psychologists at NTNU have investigated what other factors play a role for frequency of intercourse in couples in long-term relationships.
Two factors are decisive in how often women take the initiative at all.
Attitudes to casual sex
[...]Got to have passion[...]The study included 92 couples aged 19 to 30. Relationships varied in length from one month to nine years, with an average of just under two years. The couples had sex two to three times a week on average.

Oh it's a study made in Norway. The weather is probably not the only thing frigid there.
It probably isn't the only thing, it's just that we normally classify it as rape (or some degree of sexual assault) otherwise.
It's nice that they state the obvious so we know. But it does open up the question is it relationship age that makes it less often or is it just age? As in perhaps with age other things just become more important. While at a younger age it was the main goal.
But as noted by other the age thing is a bit of an issue, also that they education level and well it's in Norway, it might translate over to a few of the other nordic countries but beyond that the generalizations might become very dicey.

Interesting that they finally found a casual relationship leading from the woman's attitude to the frequency of the sex. I see a confusing, randomly misspelled and poorly refereed article up for an Ig Nobel prize soon.
