Samsung spent years trolling Apple in commercials. Now it's cloning an iPhone feature it mocked and has deleted the ads.

Samsung has a long and illustrious history of trolling Apple in its smartphone commercials. But now the South Korean firm is cloning one of the iPhone features it once mocked, and it has quietly deleted records of the ads.

Samsung unveiled its Note 10 on Wednesday and, as has been widely observed, the phone falls in line with other new devices on the market in that it does not come with a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

[...] Samsung released a memorable advertisement in November 2017 titled "Growing Up." It features an iPhone user through the ages becoming increasingly frustrated with the limitations of his phone. In the end, he caves and buys a Samsung Galaxy. In one section, he ruefully inspects an adapter cable, which enables iPhone users to turn their charging portal into a 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Fast forward to 2019 and Note 10 customers may need a similar bit of kit to use wired headphones with their device. And as for that "Growing Up" ad, it has disappeared from some of Samsung's major YouTube channels.

That's reasoanble. Buuuuuuut there will be a point where useful headphones you don't have to fucking charge stop being sold in stores because not enough products that specifically dumb people with too much money buy use them.

Maybe more portable form factors but you'll always have studio cans to fall back on if you're alright with wearing that in public.

I'm reasonably content that wired headphones will be around for some time to come. Could I be wrong? Sure. You can still buy buggy whips, though, even if there isn't much call for them any more. You may pay a premium price for them eventually.

As to including them on phones... I'm hoping that there will be at least one maker that people will flock to. More would be nicer. But is it a defintion of irony that someday a manufacturer might capture a market segment by being the last to produce audio access that is genuinely open by including the headphone jack?

I think that by that time the headphone jack, and the need for small form factor, wired headphones, will have gone by the wayside just as buggies have. Sure, someone may make them but the places to plug them in will have disappeared.

Not at all impossible, although they still have places in commercial audio gear as well and those would have to disappear as well - far less likely when things like the speaker dynamics and frequency range actually matter (though again pricey). Even then, there will be a secondary enthusiast market just as right now there's still a trade in vinyl, reel-to-reel, cassettes, and even Minidisc.

All things end, though, you're right. Just hope it doesn't have to be in my lifetime. Or maybe I do hope I live long enough that it becomes extinct but that by then I've lost my hearing.... a LONG time from now. :)

I don't care much about the jack for headphones - Bluetooth ones work well, need charging less often than the phone, and don't tangle - but they're far from the only things that you plug into a 3.5mm jack. It's the easiest way of plugging in an amplifier and a set of big speakers and I wouldn't want to faff with Bluetooth for that (the effort in pairing is amortised across a lot of uses with headphones). If you want to play music for an event from your phone, you need a 3.5mm jack.

I bought a OnePlus 5T a bit under a year ago, because the 6 and 6T both had more anti-features than improvements. Great for me: the older model was a lot cheaper than the new one. I don't know how long that will be true for though. The 7 is also a regression. Maybe the 8 will be better...

I recently sold my iPhone 8 and bought a Samsung Galaxy S6 (about $120). Newer phones didn't add much for me, and I wanted a headphone jack for a big family trip. It was definitely worth it! I wonder if there's going to be a trend of people migrating to older tech as the new stuff gets less and less functional . . .

The cases on them are extremely flexible. My dad has had one since they were new, and a few months ago forgot he had it in his back pocket when sitting in the car. It now has a nice curved frame and display on it. Everything still works, but it gave a clear example of just how flexible the newer phones are compared to the older ones and the risk of irrepairable damage if you aren't careful. He got lucky, but if you don't pay attention you might be replacing it sooner than you expected.

Don't forget the antenna for the radio, which is usually the headphone cord.
