The Trump administration is postponing some of its new tariffs on Chinese imports — a significant retreat in the trade war that has rattled financial markets on both sides of the Pacific.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced on Tuesday that 10% tariffs on certain popular consumer items — including cellphones, laptop computers, video game consoles, computer monitors and some toys, shoes and clothing — will be postponed until Dec. 15.

'What we've done is we've delayed it, so they they[sic] won't be relevant to the Christmas shopping season,' President Trump told reporters.

I guess it really is easy to win a trade war: just saber-rattle but never actually do things.

I love how this quote so easily outs people as fake news believers. It is like telling people we can safely ignore your low information opinion.

    Look up the complete quote.

But hey, aren't you just a believer of alternative truths anyways, so if you think there's a problem with the "quote" then just think it's alternative truth. Biatch.

    From here [bloomberg.com]:

When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are good, and easy to win. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we win big. It’s easy!

Sorry, that's stupid not easy. For example, if my car has a bad muffler and I don't have a clue how to install a new muffler (hence, I have a "trade deficit" with the muffler shop), then sure, not going to a repair shop to replace the muffler will hurt the repair shop(s). But I won't have that new muffler either.

The US didn't get those massive trade deficits because it could easily do or buy what the foreign trade offered. It got there because those industries were weak (and often now, non-existent). The cost of finding alternate sources is what makes that war not easy - particularly for industries that depended on Chinese sources to be competitive in foreign markets.

If I replace "easy" with "stupid" it makes no sense, so not sure what you were going for.

And if it costs too much for a new muffler you will go without or watch some youtube videos on how to diy.

If I replace "easy" with "stupid"

        Ok, let's try that:

When a country (USA) is losing many billions of dollars on trade with virtually every country it does business with, trade wars are self-destructive, and stupid. Example, when we are down $100 billion with a certain country and they get cute, don’t trade anymore-we lose big. It’s stupid!

Seems to work for me. Have you checked to see if your computer was plugged in?

That isn't a clever change of meaning due to substituting one word. That is just rewriting the quote to be what you want for some reason.

The US got to its predicament by exporting not only jobs, but the factories that produced the goods starting in the 1980s. It's been nearly 40 years since the start of it and the workforce that originally produced the goods locally is starting to die off. Textiles went to Mexico first, then China. If that could come back from China to Mexico, then cotton exports could have less distance to travel. Automation is the only way to bring it back to the US profitably. Ideally, the plants could be located near the fields that grow the product.

        Why hasn't that happened already?
