The Trump administration is postponing some of its new tariffs on Chinese imports — a significant retreat in the trade war that has rattled financial markets on both sides of the Pacific.

The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative announced on Tuesday that 10% tariffs on certain popular consumer items — including cellphones, laptop computers, video game consoles, computer monitors and some toys, shoes and clothing — will be postponed until Dec. 15.

'What we've done is we've delayed it, so they they[sic] won't be relevant to the Christmas shopping season,' President Trump told reporters.

I guess it really is easy to win a trade war: just saber-rattle but never actually do things.

I guess someone explained to Trump that the incumbent president wins when the economy is good and loses when it is bad. At this point there is no time for a recovery to get any traction if something bad happens. Expect more of whatever it takes to keep easy to understand economy metrics like the stock market looking good. We are already in one of the longest stretches of growth ever so it will be tough and it will take something truly crazy to get through a second term without ruining the legacy he wants to set. Plan your finances accordingly.

The economy isn't good for the average person, though. The metrics the corporatists use to determine whether or not the economy is good mostly tell you whether or not the economy is good for the mega rich, and not necessarily for the average person. The vast majority of people in the country can't afford a $1,000 emergency. Medical debt is and has been one of the leading causes of bankruptcy. Unemployment might be down, but many people have given up looking so they aren't counted, and even many of the people who do have jobs are underemployed or paid very low wages.

Stop believing propaganda from the corporate media that the economy is good; it isn't. Part of the problem is that people are so uneducated about this that they'll believe the economy is "booming" even when they're being fucked right up the ass...

This isn't true. The numbers are fudged to make sure pensions and social security pay out as little as possible in inflation adjusted terms.

The vast majority of people in the country can't afford a $1,000 emergency.

If true, that just means the vast majority of people in the country, who earn far more than that in a year, are idiots. The corporatists didn't force them to be idiots.

Medical debt is and has been one of the leading causes of bankruptcy.

And that's supposed to matter why? There's always going to be leading causes of bankruptcy unless some idiot eliminates bankruptcy.

As to the "propaganda", my company significant raised the wages they offered to people over the past couple of years. They didn't do it for charity. And we hire US-wide. That indicates to me that people have employment choices that they didn't have even a few years ago. I agree that the economy would do a lot better, if there weren't idiots starting trade wars.

I did. You didn't, except to spew your usual wide-angle cone of solipsistic, self-serving mental diarrhea all over this thread, like you do in every single other one you ever post in.

Your projection is showing again. It would be nice for you to actually dump all that mental bullshit down some bitbucket and start to think rationally instead. Let us recall how this latest nonsense started:

And in other news, world hunger is solved because you just had a burrito...

Which had nothing to do with my post. Look who just spewed their "usual wide-angle cone of solipsistic, self-serving mental diarrhea all over this thread" and then accuses me of doing the same.

Look, clueless people just like you will continue to spew their imaginary concerns all over any thread that pushes their buttons such as "The vast majority of people in the country can't afford a $1,000 emergency." or "Medical debt is and has been one of the leading causes of bankruptcy." while ignoring basic logic and reason. On the first matter, save three to six months of your salary and you too can afford a $1,000 emergency. It's not rocket science. The vast majority of people can afford that.

As to the second matter, it's a mobile goalpost situation. As long as there's bankruptcy, there will be leading causes of bankruptcy. Merely mentioning one is completely irrelevant as a result. Notice the original poster said nothing about why the existence of this "leading cause" was supposed to be bad nor any indication that the metric in question was getting worse. It's mere existence was somehow supposed to be proof of that.

This has got to be some kind of new concept: meta-projection. A second-string "NO U!" but somehow even more pathetic. The rest of your post, as usual, misses the point by such immense distances that it's questionable whether the point's light cone intersects with yours.

Doesn't look like that to me. But you go ahead and pioneer that as much as you'd like.

Well, that says a lot. Though not about this poster you're replying to.

Seriously, I could copy/paste this to a busy thread and they'd think it was for real, maybe advising me to get my rabies shots. Nobody would be any wiser.

You'll note that I didn't say it was. I specifically said based on the noisy metrics that make the news. A lot of people believe those no matter how wrong they are because they are repeated a lot. I also didn't say they'd actually make the economy better. I said they'd game those noisy metrics in increasingly desperate ways.
