Female-free speaker list causes PHP show to collapse when diversity-oriented devs jump ship

Under the heading, "Diversity Matters!" the website for the PHP Central Europe developer conference (PHP.CE) says, "PHP Central Europe Conference is committed to creating a conference that is as inclusive as possible."

Over the weekend, organizers of the conference, which had been scheduled for October 4-6 in Dresden, Germany, ended the event evermore after two scheduled speakers issued public statements that they would not be attending this year, citing concerns about the lack of diversity.

PHP.CE on Saturday posted a note on its website, stating "The conference has been cancelled and won't be continued*. Sorry for the inconvenience."

The asterisk points to three online posts as the reason for the decision. The first, a July 17 Tweet from Karl Hughes, CTO of educational consultancy The Graide Network, chastises the conference for a speaker list made up entirely of white men.

You can see how it was in 2018, including the list of speakers, presentation schedule, and a 9m41s "after-movie".

You don't know much about how a company is run, do you? HR does a lot of work behind the scenes, especially in smaller organizations where they also pick up jobs like facilities and procurement.

Somebody has to recruit people, organize interviews, talk to the benefits providers, fill out all the paperwork, and send paychecks. Then somebody has to deal with complaints from one employee to another, because they will happen whether HR exists or not, and the CEO sure as hell doesn't want to deal with that.

So HR has an incentive to make people get along. Otherwise they will be dealing with high school bullshit all day every day.

They're also who marketing is going to turn to when an employee does something that reflects poorly on the company. You might think it's fine to go around calling people faggots (just a guess), but there are a lot of people out there that will refuse to do business with someone who does that.

    That's all unskilled labor.

Not really the point, is it? Just because you think it's unskilled doesn't mean it doesn't need to get done. Next you'll be telling me that the janitor isn't carrying his weight because cleaning the office bathroom is unskilled labor.

Not to mention the kind of shit you have to deal with when you treat hiring as "unskilled labor". Or the money you can lose when negotiating with benefits providers.
