Bags of white powder seized as part of a "huge drugs bust" at London's Gatwick Airport actually contained vegan cake ingredients, the British Transport Police said.

A member of staff at Purezza, a vegan restaurant with stores in London and Brighton, was transporting a suitcase filled with bags of cake mix when it was seized by police Wednesday afternoon.

Brown rice flour can be combined with vermiculite for use as a substrate for the cultivation of mushrooms.

Mold too; the medium is even better for mold - takes 4-7 days for the mushroom spawn to colonize it, only 2-3 days for mold.
Those HEPA filters for a clean room are fucking expensive

Use smaller containers [ziploc.com] instead of one big one to spread out the contamination risk. Pressure cook the containers with substrate in them to sterilize. You can inoculate in open air if you're careful, or under a still air box for better results.

You don't need an HEPA filter for home scale mushroom production. You can use a clear plastic container (a Rubbermaid box) drill two fist sized hole on the wider side, glue rubber gloves in the holes and make a little trap door to acces the inside of the box. Consult that forum https://mycotopia.net/forum/56-gloveboxes-flowhoods/ [mycotopia.net] for more information.

ake a little trap door to acces the inside of the box.

That trap door spells goodbye to the clean room.
Even without strong warranties, it may still work reasonable well though in driving down the mold contamination, so thanks for that.

That is why the current favourite approach of the underground mycologist is to use a laminar flow hood [freshcapmushrooms.com]. I recommend the glovebox only because, when I was a dumb new adult, I successfully used it to produce fruiting P. Cubensis mycelium cakes while I never used a laminar flow hood.

Yeap, the laminar flow hood is the pro solution. The enclosure is not that much of a cost to build (one can even inject some ozone into the flow - just take a corona unit from an old laser printer), but:

          1. that's where the HEPA filters price add to the running cost (one slip of mind to let the hood opened without the air flow on and you may get those mold spores on the inside of the filters; mitigate by running the hood for some half-to-a-full-hour before bringing in the material inside; you'll need to buy replacements after a while tho')
          2. the space economy for storing/operating it - one simply doesn't go dismantling the hood between two sessions.

I.e. a case where you either "go pro" or, as an amateur, you are prepared to experience screw-ups often enough.
