New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said he is considering requiring bicyclists to be licensed and registered like automobile drivers currently are.

According to a report in the New York Daily News on Wednesday, the mayor also wants to expand the city's safety regulations, which already have won it a nanny-state reputation, to include requiring Citi Bike renters to wear helmets.

Mr. de Blasio called the idea of forcing cyclists to have licenses and registration a "valid discussion," the Daily News reported, and added that he also plans a crackdown on cyclists who break traffic laws.

Ah yes, here comes a tax on everyone not rich enough to have a car.
I bet they set the license fee at some ridiculous amount, probably higher than the value of a used bicycle.

    Next up, pedestrian licenses!

It’s more likely the revenue will come in a more subtle way like it does from cars: fines.

Bikes are not likely a good source of speeding ticket revenue, but all of those other violations are ripe for ticketing.

There are currently no fines for parking a bike in the wrong place (that I know of), but parking tickets for bikes would be the next logical step.

Bikes are an excellent source of revenue for most types of traffic violations. Especially roadrage inducing failure to keep up with traffic and failure to signal.

but they don't have enough cops to deal with pervasive motor vehicle traffic violations. double-parking, red light running, etc. in the first place. These are more problematic for every road & sidewalk user.

      just sayin'.

I thought the fine for parking your bike in the wrong place was to have the lock cut and the bike taken away?

Anyone walking should be assumed to be the target of a manhunt. Authorities have the right to detain them until they can prove they are not a criminal and are not carrying any criminal tools like guns, knives, or lockpicking devices like credit/id cards.

As long as Albany doesn't try to extradite anybody upstate, that should be fine.

If the fines were dedicated to improving bike infrastructure then sure let's do it. The first thing would be to get rid of bus lanes. There is literally no point in these. The only ones using them are bicycles and oversize SUVs doing 50 mph in a 30 zone to overtake the other drivers.

Convert the bus lanes into a real bicycle lane (no SUVs please) and use the left over space to widen the other lanes. Safer for everyone.

When Miami opened their MetroRail, they required a "Bikes on Trains" permit if you wanted to take a bike on the trains.... $12, one time, got you a photo ID and an educational packet that basically said: don't be a jackass. I assume if you had trouble comprehending the packet they might take your ID away and make you get another one, very low overhead version of a drivers' license.

I believe that there are far better things to go after than bicycle licenses, but... politicians will be politicians, and since the majority of New Yarkers don't ride, this might be a way to score a few points in the next election cycle.

$12 for less than $1 basically, other $11 going to the company providing the resources and training that just so happens to be ran by the brother in law of some jackass who championed this?
