New augmented reality head mounted display offers unrivaled viewing experience

Cambridge engineers have developed a new augmented reality (AR) head mounted display (HMD) that delivers a realistic 3-D viewing experience, without the commonly associated side effects of nausea or eyestrain.

The device has an enlarged eye-box that is scalable and an increased field of view of 36ยบ that is designed for a comfortable viewing experience. It displays images on the retina using pixel beam scanning which ensures the image stays in focus regardless of the distance that the user is fixating on. Details are reported in the journal Research.

Developed by researchers at the Centre for Advanced Photonics and Electronics (CAPE) in collaboration with Huawei European Research Centre, in Munich, the HMD uses partially reflective beam splitters to form an additional "exit pupil" (a virtual opening through which light travels). This, together with narrow pixel beams that travel parallel to each other, and which do not disperse in other directions, produces a high quality image that remains unaffected by changes in eye focus.

    36 degrees field of view may be the best on the market at the moment, but I still maintain that it sucks.

    Sure, your fovea isn't that wide, but your peripheral vision shouldn't be starved of virtual display just because it's lower resolution. In fact, "higher than perception" resolution in the peripheral is going to become a premium selling point - once the technology can do it, just like retina displays.

    Time was: 640x480 16 colors was the premium option, imagine trying to do anything at that resolution today.

    Apple Watch resolutions are 272x340 and 312x390, while devs are instructed to use 2x image size assets on those resolutions.

      Ever try to use a watch interface to do anything beyond: telling time or clicking a binary yes/no choice?

      Actually, I have a smartwatch and I am totally impressed that it is even possible to use a querty interface on it, just barely, and it takes up 2/3 of the display area.

        When Apple Watch starts projecting large holographic displays, they've earned my money.

        Until then, it's the $5 glow in the dark kids watch.
