Billboard has announced that YouTube streams will be factored into the Billboard 200 albums chart starting early next year. Video streams from other platforms will also count, including Apple, Spotify, Tidal, and Vevo, and Billboard says the change will also impact genre album consumption charts, like country, Latin, and others. Billboard's charts have historically been seen as a barometer of success within the music industry.

...you just have to ignore the Mainstream Media

    Quite right.

In my opinion it is due to the consolidation of the industry. Once the big record companies bought up all the competition they were free to decide what would get on the charts which is what they do now.

The record companies have looked at McDonald's business model with jealousy for many years, and now they can replicate it by producing the same thing again and again and people will buy it.

Of course that will never stop people making music, because people have always made music, but it does mean that if you're not churning out Big Macs the main stream will ignore you.

Lots of people love Big Macs, even really, really rich people, that I will tell you. It’s the stuff people really like. Believe me.
