People got used to pre-determined games where you had an easy-to-discern win condition; this is no longer the case. AI is all the rage now and you can play with your machine forever and ever on your phone:
https://www.msn.com/en-us/entertainment/gaming/infinite-text-adventure-ai-dungeon-is-now-available-on-ios-and-android/ar-BBY5Br2

Earlier this month we told you about AI Dungeon, an AI-powered text adventure with near infinite possibilities. You can type what you want into the game, and the AI will generate a response on the fly, creating a freewheeling experience that encourages cooperation and imagination. Now, AI Dungeon is available on iOS and Android as well, making it much easier to explore fantasy and sci-fi realms with an AI game master.

For PC users, there is an even better port that uses "half precision floating point using significantly less GPU memory" (you can run it on 4GB cards instead of 16+): https://github.com/cloveranon/Clover-Edition

Also includes coloured text, suggested actions and a ton of pre-defined scenarios missing from the original.

Having fun while trying to beat the game is fun. Otherwise you might as well just do random coin tosses all day without regards to the outcome. Pointless.

Even open-ended games eventually have to add new features or die. This has been the trend since the turn of the century . New features or die.

Didn't move the goalposts. Even open ended games die if you don't keep adding new features because people get bored playing them

You don't *need* to keep changing how games work in order to keep people playing them. The last change to the rules of chess was in 1862.

And chess is far less popular today among the general population. I have a few chess boards and chess books, but haven't played in years. People would rather play Risk or even Monopoly.

Has chess died yet? No? Then stop making these irrelevant points.

Heh. Yeah, I'm sure. And I'd rather eat Taco Bell than a 4-course meal at a 5-star restaurant.

You seem to forget, when Hasbro authorized the game "Monopoly Online" using a map of the world, 10s of millions took part - so much so that they had to stop and re-engineer the game. I managed to make 10th on the leaderboard through judicious use of spreadsheets to calculate the optimum moves every day. No sockpuppet accounts to attack others by proxy.

Also, the number of possible games of chess isn't infinite. Really really big, but not infinite. At every stage of the game, it's possible to see all the small number of possibilities for the next move.

You said "Even open ended games die if you don't keep adding new features", implying that non-open-ended games follow the same rule, so whether the pool of possible chess moves is finite is irrelevant.

Both open and closed-end games die without new features. That's a fact. Why are you trying to turn it into a controversy?

Chess used to be played by kids in grade school at lunchtime. Not any more. That's another fact, and again, not controversial.

Even Minecraft adds new features to keep people coming back. The problem is that over the long term, this is ultimately self-defeating, because after a certain point, the game becomes too complex for new players to get into easily enough, and without new players any game is doomed.

The last change to the rules of chess was in 1862.

Really? Didn't they change the rules last century to prohibit vertical castling? After someone used it in a game?

Pawn moved to the last row. Promoted to a rook, not a queen.
King had never moved, new rook had never moved. So the situation was set up for castling to the other side of the board.

I heard they changed the rules after that. Did I misremember the date? I thought it was sometime in maybe the 1930's.

Yeah, apparently in 1972. Evidently I'm not the only one unaware of this.
