New insights about the brightest explosions in the Universe:

Swedish and Japanese researchers have, after ten years, found an explanation to the peculiar emission lines seen in one of the brightest supernovae ever observed—SN 2006gy. At the same time they found an explanation for how the supernova arose.

Superluminous supernovae are the most luminous explosions in the cosmos. SN 2006gy is one of the most studied such events, but researchers have been uncertain about its origin. Astrophysicists at Stockholm University have, together with Japanese colleagues, now discovered large amounts of iron in the supernova through spectral lines that have never previously been seen either in supernovae or in other astrophysical objects. That has led to a new explanation for how the supernova arose.

"No-one had tested to compare spectra from neutral iron, i.e. iron in which all electrons are retained, with the unidentified emission lines in SN 2006gy, because iron is normally ionized (one or more electrons removed). We tried it and saw with excitement how line after line lined up just as in the observed spectrum," says Anders Jerkstrand, Department of Astronomy, Stockholm University.

"It became even more exciting when it quickly turned out that very large amounts of iron were needed to make the lines—at least a third of the Sun's mass—which directly ruled out some old scenarios and instead revealed a new one."

Unlike TMB who can't admit when he lied and blamed the wrong people

For all the cries of tribalism and projecting fascism on to liberals it is clear that it is more gaighting projection.

Sorry for the off-topic, but TMB prides himself on being right, always demands sources for claims, but he rarely provides his own and will not even issue a retraction for being completely wrong. His journal about freedom of speech violating laws in Virginia was a gotcha to show that liberals are the real fascist authoritarians violating the 1st amendment. Not only did this site's liberal base agree that such laws were shit, but it turns out the laws were created by Republicans.

This is a microcosm of the nationwide political divide we have right now. Republicans are heaping undeserved hatred on liberals while supporting a fascist criminal. They have gone all-in and their pride prevents them from admitting they made a mistake, or from fixing it.

Liberals around here have repeatedly criticized Obama for not following through on his promises and being yet another supporter of mass surveilllance and war. Conservatives, can't you stick up for your values instead of trying to pretend Trump somehow meets them?

It has been a long 3 watching a criminal conman run the country. If someone like TMB can't live up to the most basic character principles he claims to embody, then I don't see any hope for the country when criminals like Trump are allowed to subvert the system. There has already been widespread voter suppression and fraud, if Trump is given a pass it will only get worse. We have plenty of examples of sham democracies and the US is heading right there.

The insidious part is that the fraud is only required in key places due to the electoral college, so the fraud doesn't have to be so widespread it would be likely caught somewhere. Yay voting machines! Yay lax security! Yay dictatorship!!! Barf

It's just a standard application of Poe's law. Maybe you're a barely literate poster worried about Trump, or maybe you're a troll pretending to be such. I can't tell.

Here is a great comment I came across that lays it out well for someone worries about the idea of socialism:

Truthfully everyone should be less worried about creeping "socialism" in our society but gravely terrified of the looming fascist coup.

All of the pieces are in place. Every high office in the nation is staffed by a Trump loyalist, the only notable exception being speaker of the house.

Governments should run on trust but verify, but the Trump party is asking for blind trust to execute ruthless authority as they see fit.

No person with a passing interest in politics should support that precedent.

People have been worrying about the impending coup since Clinton. And because most higher offices are in the executive branch, they will be staffed by a presidential loyalist. It's going to take a lot more than that for an actual coup to happen.

I'm glad you're concerned about the blank checks that the executive branch has been getting, but please don't make the mistake of supposing it's due to Trump or a particular ideology. The weaknesses were always there. Trump just makes them very visible.

Trump is the first to openly court tempering from a foreign government in out elections, the first to ignore our national security advisors in favor of dictators, the first to suggest he'll run for a 3rd term, the first to suggest if he loses an election there will be consequences.

Trump is the most fascist president ever, supported by a corrupt GOP that even spurred its first defector which is pretty much unthinkable for a Republican. The evidence is ridiculously clear that he has abused his position of power for personal gains in numerous ways. He is guilty of defrauding charity.

It boggles the mind how you can spin this as some sort of "business as usual" when it so clearly is not. There are literally millions of dollars that have gone to Trump due to his personal decisions to use his own resorts. Just WOW.

You've blown the cover off, you conservatives are embracing fascism like a warm blanket and pretending it is everything it is not. I'd be embarrassed if this whole situation wasn't so terrifying for the future of democracy in the United States.

It isn't the historical fascism (which was socialist and extremely statist) but oh well. If you're going to redefine the word "fascism" to smear the best governance we've had in a century, I guess we'll just celebrate this new kind of fascism.

Admit it. You just don't like America, American values, American culture, and the American people. The left even hate themselves, as can be seen by the leftist males and whites and straight people expressing preference for everybody else. Hating yourself is mental illness.

BTW, learn some history. Trump is not the first to suggest he'd run for a 3rd term. Shit, a leftist asshole actually did it and even won, and then did a 4th as well. Trump deserves at least another term due to the leftist obstruction, but I'd really like to see him get a lifetime appointment. We need him there fighting against evil.

You apparently live in a hole in the ground. I've heard the extravagant claims before for every previous president through to Clinton. And they invariably are based on emotion rather than evidence as here.
