CNet:

Someone working for the US Space Force must be a Trekkie. Star Trek fans say a new logo is a direct ripoff of Star Trek's Starfleet Command logo.

President Donald Trump revealed the new logo for the Space Force on Friday via Twitter.

[...]As soon as it was posted, eagle-eyed Star Trek fans responded, pointing out the logo's similarities to the Starfleet Command logo. The arrow, the swirl around the arrow, the star background and text placement are almost identical.

Cultural references and inspirations are only allowed for the right people?

Trump, or any US president, lacks the authority to create a new military branch. Trump authorized the re-creation USAF Space Command (something that has existed before in the 1980's), but that's as far as his authority goes. Only congress can authorize a new branch. So the same House of Representatives that just impeached Trump also approved the creation of the new Space Force. Congress has been looking at Space Force since the 1980's. Several bipartisan committees and congressional studies have said there was a need for it due to the USAF being more focused on spending on new aircraft at the expense of space operations. Not a big surprise since USAF leadership is mostly former pilots and not space operations officers. The purpose is to give space a seat at the table. Except for the civilian department secretary (since they still fall under the Secretary of the Air Force), USSF will have its own chain of command, and its own budget. In the future (a bill is in the works for 2021 to do this) they will begin to pull in space operations from the Army and Navy as well, incorporating the personnel from those branches that work on those systems.

The military operates quite a few critical assets in space. GPS, weather, communications, mapping, and surveillance satellites just to name a few. To put it into perspective, the entire GPS system has a total of 40 military operators assigned to it right now. That less than some aircraft when you count up the crew and ground personnel. I know an senior NCO involved with this. There has been a lot of frustration over the years with USAF leadership in their community.

*US Space Command, not USAF Space Command.
