Windows 7 will not go gentle into that good night: Ageing OS refuses to shut down:

It's not only end of support that Windows 7 diehards have to contend with. Late last week a new problem emerged – systems that refuse to shut down.

Complaints have been widespread on Reddit, Microsoft's official Answers forum and on on SevenForums. Some users also reported other issues, such as not being able to view their documents folder in Explorer.

Fortunately the problem seems to be fixable in most cases. The favourite solution is to tweak the UAC (User Account Control) settings with the Group Policy setting "Run all administrators in Admin Approval Mode" or the equivalent registry setting. Then run gpupdate/force, and everything goes back to normal.

There are other workarounds, such as using shutdown from the command prompt, or logging off and then shutting down.

This does not explain the reason for the problem, which appeared mysteriously on or around 7 February. There may be a clue in two other popular fixes.

Have any Soylentils run into this problem? How did you get around it?

When EOL was announced I said Windows would magically start having problems after it's last update. Anyone who still uses any version of Windows is a fucking retard.

Such as automatically inserting apostrophes where they don't belong? :-)

That post isn't so bad, but I saw one once that was filled with at least a dozen similar apostrophes. Someone replied, "The apostrophe doesn't mean 'Look out! Here comes an S!'"

That's an interesting way to put it. I've never considered it that way. Rules of grammar haven't ruled my life, but some things just stick in my mind.

Yeah, fuck you too Coward. Windows may suck, but it keeps the eats on the table for me. Can't use Linux as a desktop replacement at work 'cuz the software we need won't run on it. Once properly beaten into submission Windows is just fine, even 10.

Linux isn't perfect either. I spent a lot of time on my Linux Mint media PC tweaking things to make it work decently. It almost never fails that to fix some oddity in Linux requires typing a series of commands into the terminal, when I can usually accomplish the same thing in Windows with a few clicks of a mouse.

Not sure why you got modded troll. Windows has it's place, because not everything can be made to on Linux. And yeah, sometimes getting a Linux box set up the way you want requires a fair amount of fucking around. I pay that price willingly, cost of doing business and not being beholden to an entity like Microsoft. Sometimes what I want to accomplish isn't even possible on a Windows setup. Sometimes it would've been a lot easier to just use a Windows machine. It's my time to spend, either way.

It's like the eco-nutters who'll claim that the tech available now, today, could totally replace the diesel engines in every semi truck everywhere, just because Tesla built a prototype. Anyone who's dealt with the oil or logging industries would laugh those twits right out of town.

It'll get there eventually, and be great when it does. But it's not there yet, and won't be for years. Every tech has it's place and is used for a reason, and sometimes is irreplaceable. Even Windows. Or diesel engines.

While most of the rest of your post is at least semi-reasonable, you're not going to get any sympathy with this one, around here.

Once properly beaten into submission Windows is just fine, even 10.

What you apparently DON'T REALIZE is the FACT that once Windows 10 has been "beaten into submission" and it's "just fine", the next time MS decides to shove yet another one of its broken-by-design "updates" onto ~~your~~ its computer, it is almost certain that the tweaks you made
to "beat windows into submission" will be GONE.. The ONLY way to win with Windows 10 is TO NOT USE WINDOWS 10! If for some reason you feel you MUST use Windows10, keep the above in mind, and think about that carnival game that is so popular, called "whack-a-mole", because that is EXACTLY what you have to do to KEEP Windows 10 "beaten into submission"....

I do realize that, actually. MS doesn't force anything onto my PC, as I have control over it. At work we use Windows, and I am frontline support for that. Switching to Linux is a no go, as software critical to the business runs on Windows, period. I have the knowledge and tools needed to make Windows behave itself. Admittedly, Win10 needs a lot more attention to make it behave, but that's been a thing since Win2K.

As I said before, Linux isn't perfect in that respect either. My Linux Mint media PC required a good "beating" or two to make it do exactly what I wanted as well.
