Reports are coming in that the Windows 10 KB4532693 cumulative update is loading an incorrect user profile and causing the user's desktop and Start Menu to be reset to default.
On February 11th, Microsoft released the Windows 10 v1909 and v1903 KB4532693 cumulative update as part of their February Patch Tuesday updates.
Since then, reports are starting to come in that after installing the update, some users state that their normal user profile is missing, their desktop files are missing, and everything was reset to default.

[...] The good news is that the update is not wiping your data, but rather renaming the original user profile in the C:\Users folder. If you are affected by this issue, you can look in C:\Users and see if you have a renamed profile ending in .000 or .bak.
Unfortunately, restoring a profile through Registry edits may be a very difficult and risky task for many people.
As some people stated that they could resolve the issue by restarting Windows a few times or uninstalling the KB4532693 update, it is safer to go down this route first if you are affected by this issue.

I was channeling a sassy black woman, so I wouldn't exactly say seriously. That said however, I stand by the analogy.
For what it's worth, I used Windows my whole life till their telemetry bullshit in Windows 7. I disabled it at first, used pirate versions that had already been cleared by many others to get rid of the forced bullshit, did whatever I had to do to remove that behavior and regain control. The response was nuclear with forced updates and a corporation controlling what services were active on my computer, after the point of sale. That was the last and final straw.
I will not have telemetry in my systems, and I take quite a few measures to prevent it. One being, not using Microsoft anymore because it's a continual battle to not be spied on. All of their services are moving towards cloud-based solutions, and that Cortana-Spy-Bot bullshit is everywhere. Microsoft wants to be Google.
Yes, their behavior is quite abusive and shows a complete disregard for our privacy and digital autonomy, while trying to extend their control and exploitation of us. Sounds a lot like abusive relationships that include domestic violence as a component to me.
As the other person said, I was hyperbolic, but not off the mark.
Technically, lunchtime is at any moment. It's just a wave function.

newer than LGA775 or the X58 LGA1366?
An AMD system newer than AM3+?
An AMD or Nvidia GPU newer than RX580 or GM1xx?
USB3?
All of these are capable of spying on you or restricting your rightful use of your system to varying degrees.
Same with the RPi4 and all the RK3399 based hardware, nevermind the majority of cellphones.
If you are really concerned about telemetry and your system spying on you, there is a lot more than merely Windows to excise from your system, although Windows is a good start.
Also for you linux users: Make sure dmidecode, Nvidia GUID, and /etc/machine-id are not accessable by Steam, Chrome, or other proprietary applications, because there are all kinds of ways you can be tracked and identified even when you're on a non-Windows platform. The amount of ways we're being spied on today should be both chilling and illegal, and yet somehow they are not.

Absolutely not. Your choice is being compared with enabling a domestic abuser. The offense might differ in degree, but the experiences of the victims are similar. To be fair, abusers are really, really good - exceptional even - at making their victims feel like they're the ones that did something wrong so your confusion is understandable.

I had never thought about it that way before, but the analogy is very accurate. Many victims of domestic violence stay because they are financially or emotionally dependent. Most Windows users I talk to who refuse to consider alternatives, including Mac, are dependent financially on some particular piece of software to run their business or are (emotionally) dependent on gaming in the Windows world.
I spent three days cleaning up a ransomware infection and restoring files this week at a place where I consult. Thank God I had set up ransomware proof backup solution based on Linux. In the end I was able to recover and restore everything and no data was lost. I constantly hear complaints from two Windows 10 victims about how the latest update caused their printer to stop printing in color. The next month, the color tab has mysteriously returned. The following month, no color. Yet they stay because they believe they need some program that they cannot substitute. Despite being abused monthly, they always stay. Inertia...
If any other business repeatedly damaged a product you bought from them after the sale - month after month - even if unintentionally, would you keep going back and re-buying? If they tore it from your hands, broke it and handed it back saying we'll fix it later; maybe next month, would you be so forgiving as we are of Microsoft?

Possibly. Sometimes they just do not want to learn something else. i.e. As I said, inertia. Just like an abused mate that doesn't want to find someone else. "He may hit me, but he takes care of me."
