Kickstarter workers make history with unionization vote:

Workers at Kickstarter voted Tuesday to form a union. It's the first time the white-collar workers at a high-profile technology company have formally chosen to be represented by a union. With growing unrest among workers at larger technology giants—including Google and Amazon—it could be the start of a trend.

[...]Relations between management and the union organizers [have] deteriorated over the [past] year. Last summer, Kickstarter fired two employees involved in union organizing. The employees say this was illegal retaliation for their organizing efforts; the company insists that the firings were performance-related and had nothing to do with the organizing effort.

In any event, Kickstarter's efforts to discourage its employees from forming a union were unsuccessful. On Tuesday, employees voted by a 47 to 36 margin to form the union.

Yes, just like the blue-collar unions saved all those citizens' jobs.

It's not about saving jubs. It's about fucking dignity when you have a job.

That's why employers in Germany generally have to care more about workers than in wild west nations. Yes, it of course makes Germany totally noncompetitive .... lol

Also, those blue-collar workers that were screwed when their jobs moved overseas would have been just as screwed without a union, because there are lots of countries around the world without pesky things like environmental protections, minimum wages, child labor prohibitions, and mandatory breaks. Remember, a corporation's ideal low-level worker is someone who works 24 hours a day 7 days a week for basically no pay, until they drop dead, at which point they're replaced by another worker who can also do the job perfectly.

Imagine a workplace where everyone feels they're getting screwed. Suddenly everything's a problem, nobody can fix anything, you get rolleyes to your face.

Imagine a workplace where at least one person has pride in what they do. Suddenly you want to help them, somebody knows how to fix anything, you look forward to work.

That's the difference in productivity. You can save a few dollars an hour up front with the first model but you're done as soon as you face a team for whom the second model is working.
