Several people were injured Monday when a car drove into a carnival procession in the central German town of Volkmarsen, police said. "There are dozens of injured, including some who are gravely hurt," a spokeswoman for Volkmarsen police told AFP.
Speaking to DPA news agency, a police spokesman added that children were among the injured. The driver has been arrested.
Germany is on high alert following a shooting spree by a far-right gunman in the city of Hanau, also in Hesse, last Wednesday, that left 10 people dead.
Monday's incident took place as residents in many parts of the country celebrate Rose Monday, a highlight of annual carnival festivities that sees adults and children alike dress up and attend parades where people play music and throw candies from floats.

Police in Germany have tonight searched the home of a driver who deliberately drove a car into crowds at a German Carnival parade on Monday afternoon.
Special police officers dressed in all black with protective gear were seen entering the property of the 29-year-old who has been arrested for attempted murder after he ploughed his Mercedes into the carnival crowd packed with children.
30 people were injured following the incident and forensic officers have now set up a cordon around the car, with pictures showing several officers examining the silver vehicle.
The driver, a 29-year-old German citizen, mounted the pavement in the town of Volkmarsen, 15 miles west of Kassel, around 2.30pm on Monday before ploughing into families that had turned out for the festivities.
Police arrested the driver at the scene. While officers could not disclose a motive for the attack, local media reported that investigators are working on the assumption that it was deliberate and that investigators were looking into all possibilities.
German police say he is being treated by doctors due to injuries he suffered in the incident, and prosecutors [say] he now faces charges of attempted homicide. Reports suggest he was from the local area and had no history of political extremism.

In each day we try to provide a balance of stories. I have processed 3 stories in the last day - this one was News, the others were Business and Science. Then there is the matter of timeliness. This story was a developing story and, at the time of processing (over 48 hours ago now), it was unclear which way it was going to go. There are also issues such as how much time has a given editor got spare to dedicate to this site? I'm currently writing this at 05:13 local time - I am awake for about 15 minutes whilst caring for a family member and I am able to answer your specific question - I haven't got sufficient time to process the story you linked to or any of the others in the queue. The Register, which is responsible for the story at the link, writes in a particular style which requires quite a bit of editing.
The story you linked to is interesting but asking the public again for their views is pointless if those views are going to be hand-waved away as Pai did last time. How is this time going to be different? The submission does not yet answer that question because currently nobody knows. The important questions that it raises are not answered. And, ultimately, the best part of this story will be after the public have had their say - which way will they 'vote', and will anything change as a result?
In summary - there is nothing wrong with the submission you have identified and, as you probably know, we have accepted several from the same submitter. There are many factors at play in submission selection (which is why we tell people not to complain if their particular submission is rejected), and today we are in the fortunate position of having enough to choose from. Very often that is not the case and we have to resort to bots to find material suitable for us to work with. This is particularly so when many of the submissions that you can see are unsuitable for inclusion on the front page, but might be ideal for someone's personal journal. I'm sure that we can all think of those prolific submitters who keep banging on about the same topic, yet when they make the effort they are capable of finding material that we can use....
