Berlin based Quasando released the source code of Gravit on github.

Gravit is completely written in HTML5, CSS3 and JS and has been released under a dual GPLv3+/commercial license.

You can try it out from here.

which is supposed to be a successor to Freehand --- they had a funding page up a while back, and promised lots, but despite getting money, never delivered on things like access to nightly builds (I funded).

Glad to see that they've open sourced it, but it doesn't help to have yet another half-baked vector drawing program --- we need one which is finished, and which implements all the features of Freehand and it's pen tool.

It kills me that I have to keep my Mac at work at 10.6.8 so that I can have Freehand/MX running on it and that there's no replacement for it, though what I really want a replacement for is Altsys Virtuoso which was essentially Freehand 4, but with the niceties of NeXT/OPENStep:

      - Display PostScript --- even for hand-coded fills and strokes
      - system-level PANTON colour support
      - repositionable main menu, tear off sub-menus, and a pop-up main menu on the right-mouse button which made some commands gestural
      - support for Services --- it was especially nice using it for diagrams which had labels done using TeXview.app's TeX eq -> eps service

Candidates for vector programs which I've tried:

      - Inkscape --- more or less usable, but there's still a lot of Freehand missing, and being locked into RGB / SVG is annoying
      - Graphos --- http://gap.nongnu.org/graphos/index.html [nongnu.org]
      - Illustrator --- the interface, its bizarre limitations and inconsistencies always enrage me
      - Affinity Serif --- the pen tool needs work
      - Cenon --- ditto
      - lots more....

I've even considered switching to hand-coding drawings using tools such as METAPOST and Asymptote or Processing.

    Features which I need:

      - Freehand's pen tool --- in particular the hold to move a point as one is placing it
      - the ability to align a node against an object and vice-versa
      - consistent handling of vector paths when joining them or adding to them

Use a Virtual Machine (VM) to keep the OS but move on hardware wise?

If I put it in a VM, I might as well switch back to OpenStep 4.2 and run Altsys Virtuoso 2.0 --- that way I get Display PostScript, &c.

Reading this - > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Display_PostScript [wikipedia.org] , it suggests the problems are that Adobe doesn't want to let it out of the box. So much so even Apple has ditched it!!!

I am willing to bet that DisplayPDF (or something like this), might be possible in Wayland...

Don't ask me how, but Qt and Gnome can both generate HTML5 from objects, so it is a short step to Postscript/SVG or PDF.

        Just a thought...

DisplayPDF (whether Apple's Quartz or Adobe's Graphics Manager (Bravo)) has the huge limitation of allowing for the display of (unsecured) files which are not printable as viewed.

            aren't the "non-printable" features only in adobe/apple/microsft?

I use okular and gnu tools, and nothing seems to be restricted...

My comment on non-printable is directed at the ads which I get at work which display fine on screen, but which choke the RIP or fail, or don't image so as to match the appearance on-screen.

That never happened w/ Display PostScript --- if something could be displayed on screen, it RIPped fine --- if it had a problem, the problem showed up on-screen when the _PostScript_ code failed.

I love freehand as well and have strong feelings about Adobe for killing it and not allowing installations on case-sensitive volumes [getsatisfaction.com] (FUCK!!!!).

I have to keep my Mac at work at 10.6.8

You can quite easily overcome this by installing 10.6 in a VM!
