German company CureVac has received a rather strange offer from the current White House.

On March 3, CureVac's CEO was invited to the White House, for a meeting with President Trump, Vice Pence and several members of the Coronavirus Task Force. Asked for when a vaccine could be ready, he estimated that a potential candidate could be ready within a few months. Apparently, that triggered the members of the meeting so much, that they've now offered to buy the company, at whatever price.

One condition though: production would be exclusively for the United States.

The move is not exactly one to gain popularity, and follows on the heels of the President's worrying statement that "a large number of new clusters in the United States were seeded by travelers from Europe".

I don't suppose there was any way I could have expressed the opinion that this is a non-story without provoking this kind of comment.

Germany confirms that Trump tried to buy firm working on coronavirus vaccine [politico.eu]

On Sunday afternoon, Germany's Health Ministry told Reuters that its spokesperson had been quoted correctly in the newspaper article, confirming that Washington had attempted to take over the biopharmaceutical company. Government sources indicated that Berlin was now offering CureVac financial incentives to remain in Germany.

Yes, but that's not the same as the administration trying to take the company for the purpose of the USA having exclusive access to its products.

Within the USA, cities often compete to lure desirable companies into their locale, often offering tax breaks and other incentives. This is just like that, on an international level.

The spin around this story is tantamount to "New York attempts to lure Amazon HQ to Manhattan so that only New Yorkers will get Prime".

So now it's just spin after having your two posts directly addressed?

I see no movement on my part whatsoever. The real bone to pick here has always been A. That it's nothing but hear-say from government officials who are almost certainly anti-Trump, and B. There is nobody actually testifying that an incentive was being offered for the purpose of making vaccine access USA only.

Look guys, Trump is an idiot, and has done a lot to damage the reputation of the USA. So why am I defending him?

I'm doing this because when you're willing to go against Trump with a trumped-up story, you're just Trumping yourselves.

This is actually kind of how Trump wins--he gets the other side so riled up, that they sink to his level. It's like some weird charisma he's got, and it irks me that so many people fall in to the trap.

You're pissing into the wind to try and convince them of that. One of the symptoms of TDS is an irrational emotional rejection of any suggestion that TDS even exists, let alone that they are suffering from it. It is on the level of religious hysteria, Trump is Satan, and even considering any other viewpoint is heretical. It is impossible for Trump to do good, or even to not do evil. Any evidence to the contrary is the devil's lies and must be rejected while chanting "Orange Man Bad".

It's not exclusive to Trump. I recall back in the mid-90s, people ranting about "Slick Willy" when referring to Bill Clinton. Perhaps the derangement syndrome goes much further back (after all, a fair number of presidents have died over the centuries), but it's happened for every president since Reagan. My take is that this hate club comes with being president. Maybe Trump plays his hate club better than most, but there's nothing special about TDS.

No, it is not new, but it has got worse. In the past you didn't have roving groups of masked thugs attacking people with bludgeons and molotovs, who were given virtual immunity from law enforcement, and here's the important bit, they think they are in the moral right when they violently attack someone for wearing a hat.
That is delusion on the same level as the most devout of the inquisition priests.

More like your use of the phrase "In other words, a random German doesn't like Trump, and was talking smack about him" shows that you have a pre-formed opinion and will dismiss possible evidence simply because you think there is a massive conspiracy to make Trump look bad.

Nothing anyone has been able to do makes Trump look worse than he does for himself! Lies about misdeeds, then a week later it comes out he did the things, then he says "no big deal." No one needs to dig a hole for Trump, and thinking some German official would spread such such a lie is pretty out there.

So what do you expect? You got defensive about Trump with zero evidence that the story was false, and it seems that it was corroborated. So, got an apology or retraction of your own? Or does being wrong mean nothing to you Trump supporters these days? Are your FEELINGS of political persecution enough for you to ignore reality and whinge about mean words?

shows that you have a pre-formed opinion

You should too. Crazy ass story appears? Let's be skeptical until supporting evidence appears.
