A group of young adults held a coronavirus party in Kentucky to defy orders to socially distance. Now one of them has coronavirus:

At least one person in Kentucky is infected after taking part at a "coronavirus party" with a group of young adults [...]

The partygoers intentionally got together "thinking they were invincible" and purposely defying state guidance to practice social distancing, [...]

[...] the virus seems to be affecting young people in the United States more than it has in China. A report released last week by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention showed that up to 20% of people hospitalized with coronavirus in the United States are between the ages of 20 and 44.

[...] "So far the demography definitely seems to be very different in the United States versus in other countries that saw this hit earlier,"

[...] In New York state, more than half of coronavirus cases -- 53% -- have been among young people between the ages of 18 and 49

From MSN:
Kentucky coronavirus party with group of young adults has left at least one person infected:

At least one person in Kentucky is infected after taking part at a "coronavirus party" with a group of young adults [...] The partygoers intentionally got together "thinking they were invincible" and purposely defying state guidance to practice social distancing [...] "This is one that makes me mad," the governor said. "We have to be much better than that."

And...From Slate:

A group of Kentucky partygoers recently attended a "coronavirus party." The event, which appears to be a pandemic-themed soiree, as you might imagine, was not a civic-minded effort to promote social distancing practices and best hand-washing practices, but a slap in the face to everyone else's collective efforts to not kill our parents and grandparents. The party mocked the virus, and the coronavirus gods were angry. One of the twentysomething attendees of the ill-advised gathering in the midst of a national emergency tested positive for the virus Tuesday.

Maybe I'm too old to get it, but it seems to me somewhat unwise to do this.

This thing is as infectious as pinkeye. "I got it by attending a party in defiance of quarantine" is and will be replaced by a million other verities like, "I got it by pumping gas at a station that had just been used by one of the infected!!!" or, "I got it by sitting on a toilet seat that wasn't properly disinfected after every use!!!"

It has become a universal device to cast aspersions on others or fire the narcissist's cry, "Oh poor, poor me!"

    > I got it by pumping gas ...

When I filled up the other day I caught some drops of gas from the nozzle when I was done (in one hand). Put the nozzle back in the pump and then wiped my hands together. When I got home I washed with soap per current instructions.

    Q. Is regular unleaded (including 10% ethanol in USA) an effective hand sanitizer?

[Aside: As a kid in the '60s, I worked on small engines (lawn mower, minibike) and used small amounts of gasoline for parts cleaning. My folks were smart enough to make sure I did this outdoors, and I was lucky enough to never have a fire. All this to say that a little gas on my hands doesn't bother me.]

That's an interesting question. My off the top of the head guess would be yes, it's an effective sanitizer, because it thins oil as well as any detergent. But I haven't seen a single study to confirm that.

The virus depends on maintaining a lipid coat, which is why soap and detergent are effective sanitizing agents. And I'd guess that gasoline would be also for the same reason. But that *is* a guess. And it also causes me to wonder about kerosene and lamp oil. And mineral oil. And Vaseline. And even hand lotion. (And also whether using hand lotion after washing your hands makes the washing less effective.)

Aspersions should certainly be cast here on these people. What you are saying is true in the sense that a very large percentage of people will eventually come down with this, but at this stage what we're trying to do is to slow the rate of infections down to a manageable level. It would be unfortunate to catch it in the manners you suggest if one is practicing a reasonable level of caution, but to catch it resulting from the hubris borne out of a juvenile desire to "stick it to the Man", then they should be held up to public shame and ridicule.
