HBO Max Temporarily Removes ‘Gone With the Wind’ From Library

An HBO Max spokesperson says “Gone With the Wind” will eventually return to the platform with a discussion about its historical context and a denouncement of its racist depictions.

On Tuesday, HBO Max removed the 1939 film from its library in the wake of protests over the death of George Floyd.

[...] Upon its release, “Gone With the Wind” broke theater attendance records and was the highest-grossing film of all time to that point. It still holds the record when adjusted for inflation. However, despite being considered one of the greatest films of all time, some film commentators have since criticized its depiction of slavery and Black people.

    > Bollocks. Or only in a really really stupid nanny-state with a really really stupid population.

Really .... so the "donot drink" on clorox bottle is nanny state ? You must live in a country with 100% educated populace (I mean educated not schooled.) who knows of the dangers of the oxidative power of halogens.

Well, you're building a straw man, but as a separate argument about nanny states, yes, I do think that such do not drink labels are pretty stupid and signs of a nanny state. Mostly because they are a gesture that does not achieve the intended goal, they're safety theatre, rather than actual provision of enhanced safety. They don't protect the most stupid, for a start - do you simply not care about that slice of the population, is this some insidious eugenic policy you're pushing? Nor foreigners who don't speak the language, so perhaps you're racist too? A childproof cap is way more effective than a label if you can't trust parents to protect their kids.

But yes, I am lucky in having most recently lived in countries where the chilren are worldproofed adequately, and instilled with superabilities like common sense, risk evaluation, and logical thought. For example, I used to live near a school which didn't have a proper school yard - at break times the kids would *go outside and play on the rocks*. And they're now doing just fine. Unlike people of the same age in the country responsible for (a) Gone with the Wind; and (b) banning Gone with the Wind.
