OpenZFS removed offensive terminology from its code

On Wednesday evening, ZFS founding developer Matthew Ahrens submitted what should have been a simple, non-controversial pull request to the OpenZFS project: wherever possible without causing technical issues, the patch removed references to "slaves" and replaced them with "dependents."

This patch in question doesn't change the way the code functions—it simply changes variable names in a way that brings them in conformance with Linux upstream device-mapper terminology, in 48 total lines of code (42 removed and 48 added; with one comment block expanded slightly to be more descriptive).

But this being the Internet, unfortunately, outraged naysayers descended on the pull request, and the comments were quickly closed to non-contributors. I first became aware of this as the moderator of the r/zfs subreddit where the overflow spilled once comments on the PR itself were no longer possible.

Actually a (black) University Professor from Berkeley just posted a long anonymous letter about what he really thinks about BLM, and the "victim" lunacy enveloping the world around it...

Very insightful, everyone should read it..

For those who don't want to bother reading the whole screed, here is the final words.

"I do not support BLM. I do not support the Democrat grievance agenda and the Party's uncontested capture of our department. I do not support the Party co-opting my race, as Biden recently did in his disturbing interview, claiming that voting Democrat and being black are isomorphic. I condemn the manner of George Floyd's death and join you in calling for greater police accountability and police reform. However, I will not pretend that George Floyd was anything other than a violent misogynist, a brutal man who met a predictably brutal end."

No matter how bad a person is the police should not get away with summary execution. Or did the "rule of law" suddenly go out the window for you rightwing authoritarians?

      Detailed Report

      Country: Bulgaria

      History

Launched in 2009, Zero Hedge is a finance blog founded by Colin Lokey also known with the pseudonym “Tyler Durden,” Daniel Ivandjiiski, and Tim Backshall. According to a Bloomberg Interview the Zero Hedge founders/authors were anonymous until 2016. A Professional Service Subscription is required to read the rest of the interview from Bloomberg, however a New Yorker article also covered their history.

Zero Hedge wrote a rebuttal article regarding the Bloomberg interview that can be found here. A quote from the rebuttal reads: “Zero Hedge hired Colin when he approached us over a year ago begging for a job after he was fired with cause from Seeking Alpha, following a fight with a co-worker.”

Read our profile on Bulgaria’s government and media.

      Funded by / Ownership

The website is registered in Bulgaria under the name Georgi Georgiev, a business partner of Krassimir Ivandjiiski.

According to Rationalwiki the only writer “conclusively” identified is “Dan Ivandjiiski, who conducts public interviews on behalf of Zero Hedge.” The blog generates revenue from online advertising.

      Analysis / Bias

In a quote from the above New Yorker article they summarize the political stance of the blog, which Lokey told Bloomberg is: “Russia=good. Obama=idiot. Bashar al-Assad=benevolent leader. John Kerry= dunce. Vladimir Putin=greatest leader in the history of statecraft.”

Zero Hedge’s content has been classified as “alt-right” and has been criticized for presenting conspiracy theories.

In review, Zero Hedge publishes pro-right wing/Trump articles such as Pat Buchanan: “Trump Calls Off Cold War II.” As well as fake news stories regarding liberals: Anti-Trump Protesters Bused Into Austin, Chicago.

Editorial content is written under the pseudonym Tyler Durden and usually focuses on conspiracies related to economic collapse. Zero Hedge sources to factually mixed think tanks such as the The Mises Institute, which promotes Austrian (Anarcho-Capitalism) economics.

It's a practical problem. Many of us may well be able to digest posts in several different languages; especially if allowed to utilize machine translation. But there would still be a very wide difference between those that rely on the machine translation; those that at least have the skill to correct some of its more important flaws; and those that need no aids at all. Only the last set would truly understand the post, and the poster might not be in the first set to boot. Determining who actually knows what they're talking about becomes very difficult in such situations; and many monolingual posters would simply recoil from any involvement.

I think it's great to throw in bits of whatever language you actually know; and expect the reader to be able to figure it out. But I feel a bit betrayed when I wind up getting a native speaker to review and confirm that you're just using google translate or a bilingual dictionary without a clue what you're actually saying. And I would feel a main page submission that wasn't in English and did not include a good (human) translation to English was a bit of dirty pool; even if it were a language I am able to read fluently myself.

I am definitely not fake Ari.

I am true Ari'. Ari' ben Yehuda. The Lion of Judah. Shæmshåm Herkulitiriot. The true Samson behind the legends of the Herculean one.

He, or she or nêêêêê omdenvill was probably a slug when I was carving the stars into the pillars at Çatalhöyük.

      Two things.

      1) I agree, the source is highly suspect

      However!

      2) The source of the article is irrelevant. The real issue is, people... all people (including me), get pulled into 'the source makes it a sensible article'.

For example, by adding a (I presume) made up, unvalidated source such as a "Black Berkeley History Professor", people give more credence to the article. Yet, what is the relevance of this specific, likely falsehood?

      *Nothing*.

      Why?

Well, if you read the NYT, or Fox News, should you immediately read and think "OK, I read it on the NYT/FN, therefore all of this is correct!". No. Not even remotely.

In fact, you should aspire to read EVERYTHING, from every source, and not fall prey to the logical fallacy of ad hominem attacking the source. You should read from the entire political spectrum, and by hyper critical of EVERYTHING YOU READ, regardless of source! And you should read from MANY MANY DIVERGENT sources.

Another poster here 'lolol' this article. It should not. Instead, it should read this thread, and Fox News, and CNN, and the NYT, and Russia Today, and the BBC, and all manner of other sources.

      Otherwise? One is merely masturbating!
