OpenZFS removed offensive terminology from its code

On Wednesday evening, ZFS founding developer Matthew Ahrens submitted what should have been a simple, non-controversial pull request to the OpenZFS project: wherever possible without causing technical issues, the patch removed references to "slaves" and replaced them with "dependents."

This patch in question doesn't change the way the code functions—it simply changes variable names in a way that brings them in conformance with Linux upstream device-mapper terminology, in 48 total lines of code (42 removed and 48 added; with one comment block expanded slightly to be more descriptive).

But this being the Internet, unfortunately, outraged naysayers descended on the pull request, and the comments were quickly closed to non-contributors. I first became aware of this as the moderator of the r/zfs subreddit where the overflow spilled once comments on the PR itself were no longer possible.

Even if it were true? He served time in Texas for aggravated burglary with a deadly weapon.

    So he completed his punishment?

      So he completed his punishment?

Punishment, meted out for the crimes mentioned.
His past actions do not somehow magically disappear just because he did some time, just ask the people affected by them.

So. Are you saying that George Floyd *deserved* to be murdered in cold blood because he'd been in prison?

Or are you saying that putting people in prison as punishment is insufficient and that anyone who is convicted of a crime should be executed?

        Some combination of both?

Shit. I'd love to see Martha Stewart strapped to a gurney. And that guy who was (*gasp*) speeding the other day (when you pay a fine, you admit guilt and are now convicted of a crime) should taste the sweet release of death, especially because he cut me off. Cut me off will you? Off with your head!

No. Literally not one single person said his previous crimes justified his death. The topic was slandering the dead and the quote was "George Floyd was anything other than a violent misogynist, a brutal man who met a predictably brutal end."

And what Minnesota law punishes crimes committed, and paid for, in Texas with summary execution?

The law that gives cops guns and license to kill. Sorry- the law says "discretion", my bad.
