OpenZFS removed offensive terminology from its code

On Wednesday evening, ZFS founding developer Matthew Ahrens submitted what should have been a simple, non-controversial pull request to the OpenZFS project: wherever possible without causing technical issues, the patch removed references to "slaves" and replaced them with "dependents."

This patch in question doesn't change the way the code functions—it simply changes variable names in a way that brings them in conformance with Linux upstream device-mapper terminology, in 48 total lines of code (42 removed and 48 added; with one comment block expanded slightly to be more descriptive).

But this being the Internet, unfortunately, outraged naysayers descended on the pull request, and the comments were quickly closed to non-contributors. I first became aware of this as the moderator of the r/zfs subreddit where the overflow spilled once comments on the PR itself were no longer possible.

"Yes, but then so are a lot of other people - even highly functional ones."

It's a real tragedy, when people who are competent in one area enter another and fuck up spectacularly.

It's a tragedy orders of magnitude greater in scope, when they manage to institute stupid rules based on their own mental malfunction.

Welcome to the 21st Century...the century where what passes for western civilisation finally manages to Oozlum as it hands the keys and management of our section of this dirtball asylum to the most defective of its decadent inmates.

I had the pleasure(?) of working alongside a prime example of a member of this novus ordo fatuorum, yech, i'm glad I'll not be around to see the fucked up society it and it's fellow momsers will create. Bowie almost got it right, he sang '..gotta make way for the homo superior...', that sentiment, I actually would agree with, unfortunately that's what these shits think they are compared to us whereas they're really just prime examples of homo rabidus..

The only amusing consolation is that they're eventually going to get eaten alive by the Islamic fundies that they're being careful not to offend (who most definitely do not share the delusional views of homo rabidus, but who have their own set of delusional views which are inherently oh-so-inimical to those espoused by our novus ordo fatuorum).

(insert something pithy here about chickens and roosts.... )

Oh Well, it's been a fun couple of thousand years...I'm off to listen to 'Dark Ages' by Jethro Tull to cheer myself up.
