OpenZFS removed offensive terminology from its code

On Wednesday evening, ZFS founding developer Matthew Ahrens submitted what should have been a simple, non-controversial pull request to the OpenZFS project: wherever possible without causing technical issues, the patch removed references to "slaves" and replaced them with "dependents."

This patch in question doesn't change the way the code functions—it simply changes variable names in a way that brings them in conformance with Linux upstream device-mapper terminology, in 48 total lines of code (42 removed and 48 added; with one comment block expanded slightly to be more descriptive).

But this being the Internet, unfortunately, outraged naysayers descended on the pull request, and the comments were quickly closed to non-contributors. I first became aware of this as the moderator of the r/zfs subreddit where the overflow spilled once comments on the PR itself were no longer possible.

Spoken like someone who has never been triggered. PTSD is a horrible, horrible illness and more people have it than you think, you insensitive clod.

Getting triggered will leave you nauseous and shaking from the adrenaline overdose, unable to concentrate effectively from the cortisol overload, crying, and then you'll feel like you only ran two marathons this morning (from some other hormone misfire). Bonus embarrassment if you're a guy, because some assholes still take a dim view of men who cry for any reason at all.

And that's if you're lucky, and your health plan has paid for the extensive psychotherapy and biofeedback training required to manage the physical symptoms, and have your tranquilizers right handy.

You can live in ignorance and anger, or in knowledge and understanding. You've clearly got access to the internet, so don't tell us that you couldn't find out anything.

The GP may not have, but I have and this is a load of crap. Yes, PTSD is difficult to live with, in part because of how quickly one can get triggered, but Jesus H. Christ, if you avoid being triggered, you also avoid learning how to cope with being triggered.

Getting triggered does suck, but it's an inherent aspect of the diagnosis. Whether it's an unkind word spoken or just a random association that sparks the triggering, either way, the sufferer needs to figure out how to moderate their emotions or it's just going to continue to flare up. Ultimately people with PTSD can learn to regulate their emotional reactions to things, it's just a long term project that requires a great deal of work and self-control.

I'm definitely not saying that having those things can't help, just that you don't need most of that stuff to successfully recover from PTSD. I had it extremely bad when I was younger and apart from therapy and a bit of medication, I managed just fine without anything that's not available to anybody with access to mental health medical care.

So even pussy assed victim-identifiers use the "fuck you, got mine" offense.
