Fox News runs digitally altered images in coverage of Seattle's protests, Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone:

Fox News published digitally altered and misleading photos on stories about Seattle's Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone (CHAZ) in what photojournalism experts called a clear violation of ethical standards for news organizations.

As part of a package of stories Friday about the zone, where demonstrators have taken over several city blocks on Capitol Hill after Seattle police abandoned the East Precinct, Fox's website for much of the day featured a photo of a man standing with a military-style rifle in front of what appeared to be a smashed retail storefront.

The image was actually a mashup of photos from different days, taken by different photographers — it was done by splicing a Getty Images photo of an armed man, who had been at the protest zone June 10, with other images from May 30 of smashed windows in downtown Seattle. Another altered image combined the gunman photo with yet another image, making it appear as though he was standing in front of a sign declaring "You are now entering Free Cap Hill."

[...] The image, as displayed on the Fox News website, was spliced with other photos, including a photo of a smashed retail storefront in May, making it look as though the scene was all playing out concurrently in the autonomous zone. "It is definitely Photoshopped," confirmed Ryder. "To use a photo out of context in a journalistic setting like that seems unethical."

[...] "I think it's disgraceful propaganda and terribly misrepresentative of documentary journalism in times like this, when truth-telling and accountability is so important," said Kenny Irby, a photojournalism ethics educator and consultant. "There is no attribution. There is no acknowledgment of the montage, and it's terribly misleading."

Akili Ramsess, executive director of the National Press Photographers Association (NPPA), said ethical standards clearly prohibit alteration of photos in news accounts.

... is anyone surprised by this? I mean, it's Fox News after all, and they're reporting on a bunch of hippies holding a mostly peaceful be-in. What do you expect them to do, run neutral, unbiased, or even sympathetic coverage of it?

The most racist people I know are not republicans. They are Democrats. You have to look no further than how the DNC treats candice owens. Shamefully is how they treat her.

Oh don't think so? Notice how Republicans talk about Americans. What do the Democrats talk about? They talk about the color of your skin. Almost to an alarming 'are you OK' degree. Republicans say 'lets figure out how to get people jobs'. Democrats say 'lets figure out how to help the black community". Both sound good but if you drill even 1 mm into that one is racist the other is about helping everyone. They are looking for the A vote, the B vote, the C vote, and so on. They pander to these groups tell them how they will help them and then play fuck all games with them. But maybe the Republican Mayor of Detroit, Baltimore and Chicago can tell us how well of a job they are doing? Oh wait Republicans and have not had a mayor in those cities for 50 years. They do not even bother to run there anymore because there is little point. These places elect the same people over and over and expect them to get it right this time. No, they are failing so hard at their jobs it is ridiculous. How many more bodies will it take people to realize that the Republicans are not at fault here. The DNC has built an empire of deception, hate and lies. Then have the gall to blame the republicans for their 150+ years of fail.

They say all us leftist liberal commie gun-taking bastards should sit down and shut up or GTFO of their country. They mock California even when they live here. They make fun of Mexicans, many of whom have been citizens here since America officially annexed California from Mexico. Many of them have family on both sides of the border as a result. And I'm talking 140+ years of being Americans here. That's not getting into the disrespect I hear about the Native Americans maintaining their reservations or putting up protests against 'progress' that might further pollute the little land they have left for their own tribal nations. There are many Native Americans who likewise are American citizens, but still travel to their tribal lands as well. Some of those Tribal lands even straddle the border, under an increasingly invasive watch by the Border Patrol, rather than, say fencing around the reservation and only bothering the residents when coming into or out of non-tribal territory.

Republicans really love telling us how much they're patriots even as they quote RT to us while also calling us socialist commie bastards, even though there are just as many if not more pictures of Republicans BFFing with Putin or Kim Jong Un.

Oh, and while we're at it, lets look at all the hebe/pedophiles/closet homosexuals among your party. There is plenty of hypocrisy on the left, but you guys double down and run with it like it's the last 30 seconds of a football game.

They weren't even putting effort into it. It's the same person slapped on top of a few different photos. They didn't even bother getting a second photo in a different pose.
The sad part is that people ARE taking these photos to be genuine because it's easy to only read a single article. You won't notice the photo manipulation unless you're reading more than one where the copy/paste job shows up.

Well, my first reaction is "FOX News" is anything but a news outlet. Calling FOX's political cheerleading "News" is something like the Soviet State newspaper being called "Truth."

a clear violation of ethical standards for news organizations

at this point, I would hope that the only people being fooled are the ones who want to be fooled. Sadly, that's a really large chunk of the population, but with "flip-flop" videos so easy to make: where FOX says one thing about Obama's actions and then says the exact opposite about T(he)rump's identical actions in identical scenarios... how hard is it to spot the bias? The only thing I find slightly entertaining is when FOX gets critical of T(he)rump - which is exposing schisms in the party.

CNN used to be decent. MSNBC was never great, but at least you could see the spin pretty easily.

A while back I went to CNN's website and what a shocker. It looked like Buzzfeed took a shit on half the page. It was unbelievably disgusting. It's only gotten worse since then. Now they mix the hype and the news and the headlines are so badly written I can't tell the difference anymore.
I understood how shitty Fox News was for many years. However, once I disconnected from watching TV, I completely missed the point where CNN took a nose dive into the clickbait bucket and turned into a caricature of what they were.

That assumes there is any local news. In a lot of places it doesn't exist anymore.

Lucky for me, I live in a place with multiple local news outlets, including a 24 hour news channel, multiple local newspapers and innumerable local news sites and blogs specifically focused on my city.

Most people, unfortunately, have to rely on national broadcasters like Sinclair [wikipedia.org] who don't have any local focus, and who force their perspective [npr.org] on those they are supposed to serve, and ignore local issues.

Pretty soon after Baby Bush got elected, 9/11 happened and the MSM quickly shifted to supporting the government and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In Bush's later years, MSNBC turned opposition. Obama's election didn't change the tone too much; Obama himself had a rocky relation with the press, restricting interviews and press conferences.

It started earlier than that. The moment I realized it was when I caught Robin Meade because my wife liked watching her. Every few stories she would interject her opinions about a story.

Bias always exists to some degree. But when the reporters or anchors feel free to interject their personal opinions one it is no longer news.
