China is furious that environmental readings have exposed lies around COVID-19 deaths. The data collected shows a clear mismatch from the information released by the Chinese government about how many people died and at what time. This is a very sensitive subject with China engaging in a cold trade war with Australia over the origins of COVID-19 while providing support to affected smallers countries as calls are made for China to pay billions in penalties due to their coverup.

Before Beijing's crackdown, China's bureaucracy had been conducting business as usual – analysing, assessing and reporting on everything about its citizenry. The researchers from Washington University and Ohio State University say they have tracked down this early government data and combined it with reports in state-controlled and social media.

Among this data was the activities of eight crematories in Wuhan. By January 25 these were inexplicably operating around the clock.

Based on such sources, the researchers argue the total number of infections and fatalities before February was at least ten times that of the official figure announced by Beijing.

[...] The study tracked the sale [of] funeral urns to verify these estimates. In the January-March period during which the crematoriums were operating at peak levels, some 36,000 had been distributed.

The default position is to doubt Chinese stats, with good reasons.

But give them a credit where it's due. They published the gene sequence of the virus so others can develop test kits.

So, did they sequence the virus before or after the outbreak?

Natural genetic sequences can't get copyright protection. There is no "author" to extend it to, unless you are one of those SARS-CoV-2 was made in a lab types.

Yabut. Had they not tried to hide what a mess they had on their hands the world could have gotten involved 3-6 months earlier.

Keep in mind these are the same folks that arrested the doctor who first reported the problem. The same doctor that later died of 'rona.

Also keep in mind satellite analysis of air quality of certain Chinese cities showed crematoriums running full tilt while the authorities were all "everything is under control, nothing to see here".

This is probably the wrong place to mention when a failed launch wiped out a village [wikipedia.org], which to my knowledge China has never acknowledged. In 30 years they haven't learned that they can fool their own people all the time, but the world will know.

This is xi the poo chicom, with their "wolf warrior" delusional diplomacy corp. What did you expect?

First thing first, get rid of all their exceptional privileges in WTO. Their economy is heavily dependent on international trade. Squeeze them in their pocket book.

Whose vengeful ghost decided to do a little world travelling, eventually got to the US, then whispered "check the crematorium stats" in the Washington and Ohio State researchers' ears.

      Eh, I'm going with that.

Individual Chinese researchers published the gene sequence, if I remember correctly: the next day their lab was closed, and they had to start explaining.
