Reddit, Acting Against Hate Speech, Bans `The_Donald' Subreddit

Reddit has banned 2000 subreddits, including "The Donald" for hate speech.

Reddit, Acting Against Hate Speech, Bans ‘The_Donald’ Subreddit

"The community or “subreddit,” called “The_Donald,” is home to more than 790,000 users who post memes, viral videos and supportive messages about Mr. Trump. Reddit executives said the group, which has been highly influential in cultivating and stoking Mr. Trump’s online base, had consistently broken its rules by allowing people to target and harass others with hate speech.

“Reddit is a place for community and belonging, not for attacking people,” Steve Huffman, the company’s chief executive, said in a call with reporters. “‘The_Donald’ has been in violation of that.”

Twitch, Reddit Crack Down on Trump-Linked Content as Industry Faces Reckoning

Twitch, Reddit crack down on Trump-linked content as industry faces reckoning:

Video streaming platform Twitch temporarily suspended President Donald Trump's channel and social media site Reddit banned a longtime forum used by his supporters in separate actions Monday aimed at curtailing hateful content that come as the tech industry grapples with its handling of the president.

Reddit CEO Steve Huffman announced in a post that the r/The_Donald forum, which boasted over 790,000 subscribers as of earlier Monday, has been shuttered for frequent rule-breaking, antagonizing the company and other communities and for failing to “meet our most basic expectations.” Huffman said it’s one of about 2,000 newly banned forums — known as subreddits — including at least one prominent progressive community, as part of a broader crackdown aimed at “closing the gap between our values and our policies to explicitly address hate.”

“All communities on Reddit must abide by our content policy in good faith,” Huffman wrote. “We banned r/The_Donald because it has not done so, despite every opportunity.” Reddit said the ban took effect at 1 p.m. Eastern time.

Twitch, a subsidiary of the e-commerce giant Amazon, confirmed on Monday that it has separately suspended Trump's campaign channel on the platform for posting videos that ran afoul of its rules against content that “promotes, encourages or facilitates discrimination, denigration, objectification, harassment or violence” based on an individual’s identity.

A company spokesperson said the channel violated its rules by rebroadcasting a video of Trump's 2015 event kicking off his presidential candidacy, in which he referred to Mexican immigrants as “rapists." At the time, Trump said, "When Mexico sends its people, they're not sending their best," adding, "They're bringing drugs. They're bringing crime. They're rapists. And some, I assume, are good people."

When you have a bunch of bigoted morons getting together to echo their untrue and largely irrelevant fears to each other, inevitably they wrongly blame the outside groups they're already prejudiced against, and call for violence.

But don't be fooled by the apparent stupidity in getting things wrong. That's not where their idiocy really comes out. Many of them know quite well that they're full of sh*t, and are trolling, and think the rest of us are the stupid ones for not getting that. They purposefully spew things they know deep down are lies, in pursuit of their real goal of winning Nature's game of "survival of the fittest". If there are fewer brown people, that leaves more room for more white people. To them, that's what life is about, and all that it is about. Winning isn't everything, winning is the only thing! The real idiocy is that they don't get why playing that game dirty, the way they do, is folly.

Tearing down the bulletin boards they use to parade their lies, what does that accomplish, really? It definitely feeds their paranoia and sense of grievance and victim-hood. I don't know what is a good answer to this problem. One of the few things that does work, fast, is showing them that they are badly outnumbered. That makes them tuck in their tails and slink back to their rat holes, and begin to think that maybe there's good reason why the majority does not share their views. Another one that works, albeit slowly, is education, particularly college education. High school could work too, but sadly, that is too often administered by idiots who constantly seek to maintain order through enforcement of arbitrary rules, stuff like no dying your hair weird colors such as green, and no reading of certain books such as Huckleberry Finn. You know the sort-- the kind of administrator who wants to keep things simple, rushes to judgment, gets it wrong, and doesn't care because he's bigoted against the wrongly accused anyway. He's got a simple way to railroad someone he's prejudiced against, and he's going to use it. Further, it is especially upside-down to have teachers who are jealous of and hate smart kids, the educator who hates those who are best at receiving education, but there are plenty of those too. High school has too much of that kind of crap, and it sets a terrible example. The students are hardly innocent in all this, constantly pushing school into being nothing more than a popularity contest that requires conformance with a bunch of petty and mean invented standards the real purpose of which is to serve as shibboleths, which make an all too good foundation for bigotry.

    yep,

Shutting all this stuff down isn't stopping it, it is concentrating it. It is a distillation process. 8chan was an example of that. There were a lot of dumbass's on 8chan, but they were mostly there because they got banned elsewhere. Crazy only appears crazy because it is different from its sarroundings.

More banning means more extremism, not more. If there are that many people being swayed by propaganda, then maybe there is some consideration to be given as to how much consumer choice exists? Maybe the issue isn't that there is a lot of propaganda, but that it is more covert than it used to be? And the reason it is more convert than it used to be is because of the ad-tracking industry. Propaganda is less effective when it is generalized.

IOW, if you want to stop extremism, the tool to do that is already there. Restore the 4th amendment and suddenly you'll find that attacking the 1st stops being neccessary.

Which is to say that micro-targetting is the reason for the increase in polarization. If you want to create rational discourse, stop using it. And I say that knowing that every word I write here is being used to vector psychologically abusive content at me personally to convince me that some asshat is on my side. Which pisses me off, and makes me supportive of those who would take restorative measures. So extremism is being created, even if it is just extremism to see each others civil rights respected.

Speech is being chilled. Extremism is increasing because it is being chilled. I base this on the fact that I would consider the micro-targeted corporate response to this post before making it. And more often than not I choose not to post because of the effect micro-targetted content has on my own mental health. I am aware of the psycholigical schism. Most people aren't. That schism leads to stress, which makes them vulnerable to fundamentalist persuasion, which leads to riots. BLM is just the dissident brand dejour. People are standing up because they are discontent. The discontent doesn't neccessarily mean that they believe in BLM, it just means that they want to stand up and that is the only place they feel enough mutual support to do so.

I am not a strict-constitutionalist. However I am a strict jursdictionalist. When the scope of bench law exceeds the size and effect of a constitutional amendment, it is extra-jurisdictional to the judiciary branch. Which is to say the courts have buffered corporate intrusion into civil rights to such an extent that the collective precedent has become injurious to the exercise of civil discourse. IOW Corporate personhood and partularly corporate speech, in the form of micro-targeting, is having a chilling effect on the first amendment.

But no worries, SCOTUS is a one stop shop for all law relating to speech, no other branch is neccessary. /sarc

It is irrational to think that the DNC and RNC aren't both aware of the effect of micro-targetting considering they both buy the related products. In this regard they are both on the side of polarization and extremism. Or more succinctly, both mainstream parties affirm and abide a track towards extremism that has been laid by the corporate sector, and SCOTUS has also endorsed that path through its insane interpration of the preamble and article 1.

The only people voting in a two party system in this country, are those voting for third parties.

Actually the driver has a pretty good case. Clearly the protest wasn't permitted because the roadblock cars weren't cop cars. Second, the road probably was placarded 70/45 or "no slow moving traffic".

So the people who put up an incompetent road block are accessories to manslaughter, and the peds were injured because they broke the law. So the driver is up for maybe negligence, because he should have been able to stop. But the manslaughter charges are on the first crime. Which was doing a half assed job of blocking a highway.

Christ, at the very least they could have put some extra lights on the fucking van. They turned the vehicles sideways so the head and taillights didn't face the oncomming traffic. They might as well have just put a timber log across the road.

I almost got creamed by a cement trailing because of something similar. The tail lights were narrowly spaced, and it was foggy. From a distance it looked like a vehicle much much further away. His trailer was not in conformance with safety standards, so it would have been his fault if I hit him.

The accident was caused by the owners of the roadblock cars. The state has a standard for putting up safe roadblocks. My guess is in this state it was publicly available on the Internet. The roadblock didn't make ANY effort to conform to the standard. It was therefore criminally negligent. The resulting homicides would be the result of that criminal negligence, and the respective deaths therefore manslaughter. the driver was an unwilling participant.

That is the argument I would make. And he/she will probably get off, (and should) because the jury will all have had near run ins with dumbass's on the highway.

Remember, this happened in the city that withdrew police and left the mob to rule part of it. If a demonstration for POC want to occupy a major highway in the middle of the night, then they can certainly do so in Seattle.

The driver being a POC himself won't help him here.

So was Lee. Which was why Lincoln asked him to command the northern armies. Incidentally he refused knowing full well that his entire estate would be siezed. You've seen it of course. Arlington cemetery is Lee's old place.

Southern whites celebrate the men who fought, not the reason they fought. The fact that the statues didn't go up until the 20th century is because that is how long it took the economy of the south to recover from war. The daughters of the confederacy, are just that. Daughters. Who loved their veteran fathers just like any daughter does.

I understand the beef. But BLM is a bunch of hooligans and I will never support them.

I canvased for Obama BTW. So my white guilt card is all payed up. I can think your a dick now and it doesn't have to be about race. Yay progress!
