More interesting science from PsyPost,

New research has found that people with "dark" personality characteristics, such as psychopathy and narcissism, are less likely to comply with efforts to impede the spread of the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and more likely to stockpile goods such as food and toilet paper.

Two new studies, both published in the journal Personality and Individual Differences, reinforce previous findings that the "Dark Triad" of narcissism, psychopathy, and Machiavellianism is associated with ignoring preventative COVID-19 measures.

But the new research indicates that health beliefs and situational perceptions may play a more important role than personality traits alone.

Dark Enlightenment, or Dark Triads?

This isn't about conforming to arbitrary social rules of the sort teens impose on themselves in high school. The Mask Refuseniks who have no immunity and want to hang out near lots of others are idiots or nut cases. Lot of them aren't doing it out of any strong convictions, they're doing it because their leaders have scorned masks. They are weak minded, and spiteful.

Nothing new, you say? This coronavirus pandemic is unlike anything I've ever seen or heard of. The 1980s had AIDS. But AIDS was nowhere near this bad. Only had to avoid blood transfusions, at first, until tests were developed to screen blood, then transfusions were safe again. And had to be careful with sex, and anything else that could involve contact with bodily fluids, such as dental work. It wasn't hard.

It's also a lot, lot different than historic plagues, when people didn't know much about disease beyond empiric stuff like that staying far away from sick people was a very good idea. WWI flu is the closest analog. And a lot of people have been wrongly thinking this isn't so different from the flu, might even spread less during the summer, same as the flu.

And, I insist that it IS about conforming to arbitrary social rules. Everyone is scared, everyone wants guidance, so they accept whatever guidance the group accepts. Mask Refuseniks

    I prefer "COVIDiots" 😊

Nothing new, you say? This coronavirus pandemic is unlike anything I've ever seen or heard of.

Well, there was the 1918 H1N1 pandemic:

    • 500 million infections — current infections have "only" reached 16.1 million so far
    • 50 million deaths worldwide — current wordwide death toll is "only" 645 thousand
    • 675,000 deaths in the USA — current US death tolls is "only" 149,000

But be of good cheer. These numbers are rising daily, and with covidiots a-plenty amongst us, they will keep doing so.

Keep in mind that the world population in 1918 was slightly under 2 billion, so that pandemic infected roughly 25% of the population. Corrected for population inflation, that would mean up to 2 billion infections this time around. Taking into account the current fatality rate of 6%, that could mean the 2020 pandemic has the potential to rake up twice the death toll of that one, even with a much milder virus than that flu, and a much better state of healthcare than during World War I.

When the doctors suggest measures to deal with an ongoing pandemic, that's scaremongering? When social conservatives cry that the Mexicans are coming for our jobs and our women, that's, what? Not scaremongering?

And the solutions? Wear masks and practice social distancing. Works well. In contrast, a wall is only a little effective, certainly not effective enough to be worth the cost. We're talking about insulting those who refuse to follow arbitrary rules. Yes, arbitrary. This disease is provably less fatal per case than the flu and is well on track to kill less this year than tuberculosis, neither of which we do much of anything about compared to this hysterical bullshit.
