Google will keep "nearly all" of its workforce—around 200,000 employees and contractors—working from home for another year, The Wall Street Journal has reported. Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly made the decision last week.

The long timeline gives more certainty for Googlers who are making school and housing decisions for the coming academic year. Previously Google workers were due back in the office in January.

If I was one of those Google employees, it would take me a hot second to move my family out of the Bay Area and to a part of the country with lower costs of living. Why wouldn't you? It's not like anybody's going to the theater or sporting events anyway.

Sure, but this isn't permanent, at least not officially. So next year if they decide not to extend it and bring everyone back, you what? Move back, try to find housing and probably end up paying more than you already were before you left?

No, I'd look for a different job that allows working from home. As a Google employee, that shouldn't be too hard.

Then why not do that anyway? If that's your goal, you would never need the Google WFH to happen to start your search.
