One Mystery of Stonehenge’s Origins Has Finally Been Solved:
For more than four centuries, archaeologists and geologists have sought to determine the geographical origins of the stones used to build Stonehenge thousands of years ago. Pinning down the source of the large blocks known as sarsens that form the bulk of the monument has proved especially elusive. Now researchers have resolved the mystery: 50 of the 52 extant sarsens at Stonehenge came from the West Woods site in the English county of Wiltshire, located 25 kilometers to the north of Stonehenge. The findings were published on Wednesday in Science Advances.
[...] The team’s breakthrough came unexpectedly in 2018, when a sample core that had been drilled from one of Stonehenge’s sarsens during a 1958 restoration project was returned to England after it spent 60 years in a private collection. The researchers were granted permission to destroy part of the core for a more detailed analysis. [...] Using two types of mass spectrometry, the team determined the levels of 22 trace elements in the core and compared them with the levels in sarsen samples from 20 different sites dotting southern England. The chemical signature of the core exactly matched that of one of the sites—West Woods, which encompasses about six square kilometers.
The finding “looks to be fairly convincing and fairly conclusive,” says Joshua Pollard, an archaeologist at the University of Southampton in England, who was not involved in the new research. “It’s a major achievement.” Located just south of the River Kennet, West Woods has often been overlooked in archaeological research, he adds.

Azuma is a bigot, but nobody should lower themselves to her level by doxxing her or composing a screed like this. She is just not worth it. She is a pharmacy tech with delusions of grandeur and an endless store of narcissism.
For our own sake we should hold on tightly to the goal of civil discourse. We all stumble along that road, but that has to be what we're aiming for, not...this.

There is a lameness filter that's supposed to prevent identical comments. My experience is that at least when using "plain old text" to post a longer multi-paragraph comment, the lameness filter doesn't actually detect that the comments are identical. I suspect this is due to the addition of formatting when the comment is stored in the database, which is compared to the text that's submitted but lacks that formatting. I can't say for certain and I haven't tested this under other settings, but it's a first guess as to why the filter doesn't actually prevent identical comments. Now, it could be defeated fairly easily with slight modifications to the text, so that may not be sufficient. And I suppose that a more complex filter might be a database intensive operation that is to be avoided.
That said, heuristics to distinguish between spam and non-spam text have been around for quite a long time. Such features have been included in email clients like Mozilla/Thunderbird for over a decade. I see no reason that a filter couldn't be trained with spam comments (based on moderation) and non-spam comments (perhaps anything with a net positive moderation). Any comment where the spam mod is overturned would also be included in the non-spam category. I see no reason why this couldn't detect spam comments when the strategy has already been used quite effectively to combat spam email. Any correct that's flagged as spam by the filter is still subject to review by the admins, who could correct it and help to better train the filter.
