For those of you into Ham (Amateur) radio, especially the Technician class license holders, this will be pretty exciting and a good way to keep interest in the hobby going due to now having HF transmit ability. The article discusses the re-balancing for digital modes as well, which many people will find to be good move in the digital age.

"ARRL[*] has asked the FCC to expand HF privileges for Technician licensees to include limited phone privileges on 75, 40, and 15 meters, plus RTTY and digital mode privileges on 80, 40, and 15 meters. The FCC has not yet invited public comment on the proposals, which stem from recommendations put forth by the ARRL Board of Directors' Entry-Level License Committee, which explored various initiatives and gauged member opinions in 2016 and 2017."

Modified Gemtronics 12watt 60channel (pll hack) CB with a tube type 100w amp and modified turner supersidekick@120% modulation on SSB to a penetrator antenna. The CB was 70s facebook.

The CB was 70s facebook - until the solar cycle turned and the band went back to being what it was intended to be: local.

CB was a really poor choice of band, unless the industry just wanted a bunch of people to abuse it and buy renegade equipment, then it was brilliant.

That was around 1979? It pretty much took out anything a mile away. Around 1977 you could talk to Australia from San Diego.

In the 80s I had contacts from in Houston Texas to California, Hawaii, and (Japan - no talking just a response.)
Used a 2 Element Yagi with a home built stepper motor tilt and a DC motor rotor on a upside down bicycle fork mounted on a 11ft ladder on the edge of my 12ft porch. Fed with at 6 conductor cable to a hand box with toggle switches. A preamp with 38db gain and a 30 watt power amp. Both designed and built with the help of the 1977 ARRL handbook. The most expensive part was the RF transistor in the power amp.
        Fun times.

I really like this kind of post.

Making do with what you have.

It's nearly a lost art. But this kind of ingenuity is the foundation of our technology.
