From The Verge:

President Trump has signed a new executive order which will block all transactions with Bytedance, TikTok's parent corporation, in an effort to "address the national emergency with respect to the information and communication technology supply chain."

The move comes after months of escalating tensions, which saw Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and others at the White House warn that TikTok presented a national security threat because of its Chinese ownership. Microsoft is currently in talks to acquire portions of the app, aimed to be complete by September 15th.

A parallel order banned transactions with WeChat, a popular texting app in China that maintains a small user base in the US.

[...] The executive branch has the power to levy sanctions against individuals and corporations by placing them on the "entity list," as the US did against Huawei and ZTE last year. But such sanctions are typically put in place by the Commerce Department rather than the White House, and subject to a specific rule-making procedure that seems to have been short-circuited by the surprise executive order.

Considering that India banned these (and ~45 more) apps last week I'm pretty sure it has nothing to do with 'trade' or 'censorship' and everything to do with these apps being owned by CCP controlled organizations that are using these apps for spying and other nefarious data collection.

For India, it is most likely protectionists who are behind banning the app.

India is currently run by extremely far-right extremists (many call them fascists). There are large parallels to the situation in the US. Modi's base are Hindu supremacists to Trump's white supremacists. But, Modi's government has gone even further than Trump+Republicans. They are administering citizenship tests where if you are Hindu you are a citizen, if you are Muslim, you are not (for those unfamiliar, there are more Muslim citizens of India than there are Muslims in Pakistan). They are also rounding up people and putting them into camps. It is terrifying that the far-right has ascended in so many places in the world, and all the evil that brings.

Any evidence? I have family in India and I have nothing of this.

I'm surprised you hadn't heard of it then. Chinese soldiers tested their stalemated positions and ended up in hand to hand combat with Indian soldiers. I heard some ended up falling over the side of the mountain.

Did India also demand a cut from any sale of the company?
