Cory Doctorow reports:

Har-har-f[...]k-you, said Albequerque's murderous, lawless police department, as they fulfilled a records request from Gail Martin, whose husband was killed by them, by sending her encrypted CDs with the relevant videos, then refusing to give her the passwords.

I really liked Cory's to-the-point description, but Boing Boing originally got the story from Tim Cushing at Techdirt.

Now the APD's being sued. The firm is seeking not only access to the password-protected videos, but also damages and legal fees. According to the firm, access to these videos is crucial to determining whether or not Gail Martin has a legitimate civil rights case. Without them, the firm is no better positioned to make this call than the general public, which has only seen the lead-in and aftermath of the shooting.

This isn't the APD's only legal battle related to its IPRA non-compliance. Late last year, KRQE of Albuquerque sued it for "serial violations" of the law. That's in addition to the one it filed over a 2012 incident, in which the PD stalled on its response to a journalist's public records request before releasing the requested footage at a press conference, basically stripping the reporter of her potential "scoop."

    Lets look at this logically:

gewg_ has submitted a large number of stories. You might not like his politics - and nor do I - but using this story as an example, we should be discussing the Alburquerque police response to the request for information rather than the politics of the person who submitted it. There is a worthwhile discussion to be had about that. And anyone who submits a large number of stories will get a percentage accepted. Because gewg_ isn't actually a member under that name I cannot give you hard figures - but I have personally deleted a good proportion of his stories before they even get out of the submission bucket.

The quality of the story is, of course, important. But as I have said - the actions of the police is a good story. The bit that I don't actually like from the story is a quote from the source article, and my job is not to censor sources or community members but to make sure the story gets discussed. The quality of the comments is more important to my mind, and constantly spending over 50% of the comments discussing the submitters politics is a waste of time. You don't know my politics, nor I yours - and it doesn't matter because that is not the subject under discussion.

The reason the queue is already loaded is that both n1 and myself also want to have a weekend with our friends and families. So we have done the work ahead of time so that we can try to relax and enjoy ourselves. That we have to come online (again) to explain that there are only 2 of us working 24/7 is beginning to grate a little. If you don't like the current system, step forward, get yourself trained as an editor, and give up your weekends please, so that we can perhaps enjoy ours. I do not want to spend more time today processing the Brown story (or any other story!) just so that you have a story you like. If you don't like gewg_ , please don't read his stories.

You seem to think that having 7 stories in the queue is a lot of choice. One year ago we got worried when we had less than 20 to choose from, and 30-40 was a normal day. The quality will improve when we get considerably more good quality stories to work with. That ball is firmly in the community's court.

Of the stories in the queue as I write this (8), one is regarding a possible security problem with our site and is being actioned away from the front page, one is the request for a poll and isn't a story, one is on hold until tomorrow when it will reach a bigger community audience, one is another gewg_ story and we have had enough of that for today, and the remainder have arrived since I finished processing stories and started trying to enjoy my weekend. I'm sorry if my 24 hour day is not long enough for you, but actions speak louder than complaints, so I can begin to train you up tomorrow on #editorial. It will take 2 - 3 days and isn't too difficult. In the meantime there is much in the wiki about the editing procedures, the requirements and other information, it would be a great help if you can have read and digested them before logging on tomorrow.

I apologise if you support this site in some other capacity but that is the problem with posting as AC - I haven't got a clue whom I'm talking to or what your contribution is/has been.

Maybe the story behind the submission is a good one. It's very hard to tell that, though, when the submission links to Boing Boing and Techdirt of all places.

There's no point even trying to discuss this matter if the information we have about it is from questionable sources.

A low quality submission with low quality links will make good discussion of even the best stories nearly impossible.

Maybe another pending list is needed. One that lists stories that may have merit, but that need to have the submissions edited or improved by the community before they should appear on the front page. In this case, maybe somebody could have provided links to more reputable news sources describing this incident. At least then we can discuss this matter based on good information, rather than information that some may find suspect.

Because most visitors to Internet tech-leaning sites aren't helpless babies who have never heard of google [google.com] or yahoo [yahoo.com].

          Fine, point motherfucking taken.

Now admit you are too lazy to actually fucking look into it yourself.

When I come across an article that I disagree with, I research it and see if there is other information out there to dispute the facts. If there is I post it in the comments and get a +5 Informative in a few minutes. You seem to have some sort of compulsion to just shit on the conversation instead.

Frankly it looks like you want the Michael Brown story posted. I am guessing that you are the submitter, I fully plan to troll the fuck out of that article now.

Go for it. The story itself is just one big troll of the "you dummies all suck" variety.
