The anti-vaccine sentiments that originated with a [completely] discredited British study linking the MMR (measles, mumps, rubella) shot to autism have made their way to other western countries like Australia.
According to the government agency that tracks Australia's childhood vaccination rates, the rate of kids going without their shots has doubled over the past decade.
[...]Australia has announced an aggressive new approach in this area: Cutting off government benefits to parents who refuse to inoculate their children.
Under the proposal, parents who claim philosophical objections to vaccines will no longer be eligible for welfare payments and childcare rebates that can equal up to $11,500 per child in American dollars. Prime Minister Tony Abbott announced the policy change on Sunday, although it still has to be approved by Parliament.

I was very much pro-vaccination for the longest time, until I researched the reality of vaccinations. Here is a small part of my findings:
1) There has never been a disease that has been cured by vaccinations. Not one. Not Polio. Not Measles. Not Mumps. Not Rubella. Not one. Every disease you think was cured by vaccination was either eradicated before the vaccine was introduced, or was so close to eradication that vaccines played no demonstrable role in its eventual eradication. Some vaccines provide temporary protections in isolated cases, but sanitation improvements are the primary reasons for the eradications of most diseases.
2) There has never been a study to show that an immunization acquired by vaccination has prevented an infection that would have occurred without the vaccinations. Not one.
3) "Safe" means that fewer than 20% of people getting the vaccination have side effects (minor, severe, or fatal). It is expected that up to 20% receiving the vaccination will have some problems caused by the vaccine (up to and including death), and that is considered "safe". "Effective" means that the vaccine induces antibodies. That's it. There is no relationship between the production of antibodies and the acquisition of an immunity. The presence of antibodies allows the vaccine to be labeled as "effective". "Effective" specifically does not indicate that an immunity is conveyed.
4) The pharmaceutical companies have no liability for their product. Not one penny's worth. The U.S. Government is liable for all damages caused by vaccines sold by U.S. companies, is the sole arbiter of whether a vaccine has caused damage, and still pays billions of taxpayer dollars a year in damages that are directly proved to have been caused by vaccines.
5) Most diseases for which we vaccinate are inconveniences, and very rarely dangerous. The vaccinations themselves have a higher rate of damage than the diseases which they are marketed to cure (note the intentional use of "marketed" instead of "meant"). Almost all of us, by way of example, have contracted the Polio virus at one time or another. The vast majority of us notice no symptoms at all. More vaccinated people have contracted crippling Polio than unvaccinated people.
6) The vaccine producers have absolutely no idea what is contained in the vaccines.
And that is just the tip of the iceberg.
