Unless you've been hiding in a cave in Afghanistan you know about the Apple Watch. Well, it went on sale today. It may be a useful piece of technology or it may be a waste of money, but it's here and it's real.

For those Soylentils who like to buy tech gadgets and then tear them down, El Reg has already done it for you. Enjoy.

A comment like that on an article about smart watches probably isn't the best place for that joke. Pebble, then various Android watches were release long before the Apple watch. They did it first, the do it cheaper, and they (arguably) do it better and with more choice. Really, you'd be hard pressed to find anything that Apple has done first for quite a few years.

That's exactly the joke. Apple isn't first, but when they come along all the sudden all the similar products out there start looking like it. I swear people hear Apple use the word 'innovate' and rember it as 'invent'.

Really, you'd be hard pressed to find anything that Apple has done first for quite a few years.

Why is "first" so important? Best is more important. Mac OS wasn't the first GUI. OS X wasn't the first UNIX-based GUI. The iPod wasn't the first MP3 player. The MacBook Air wasn't the first thin laptop. The iPhone wasn't the first smartphone. And yet all of those were (perhaps arguably) the best of their types at the time, and most were hugely influential. That's what Apple is good at.

For the people who don't want an Apple Watch now (and that includes me), remember the old quote: "Of what use is a newborn baby?" Apple is not like Samsung, popping out a zillion products and seeing what sells. They design things very carefully, plan ahead, and only come out with things they are pretty sure they can develop for the long haul. I predict that within five years, not having a smart watch will be a bit like not having a smartphone.

I agree. I'm saying that there have been better, cheaper, and more attractive smart watches for some time now. Of course, they have lacked the free advertising Apple gets from every news organization in the world and a captive clientèle that has few options because of platform restrictions.
