But a lot of people don't seem to understand that, and while the coasts tend to view the Midwest as a backwater flyover land, similar to the mountain states, they all seem to like to visit them because we have the nice things that aren't giant buildings. People come to Minnesota for our lakes, fishing, forests, and rivers (similar for the rest of the upper Midwest), people go to Colorado for the mountains and skiing. I get to live that life, not just visit it, although I do like going out to Colorado as I have friends and family out there who also get to live the life there.

I frequently get offers from both east and west coast companies wanting me to relocate there and turn them down, and I make it clear why. Even if the pay is higher it isn't high enough to afford me the same quality of life I currently have in Minnesota. I make it clear that I want a reasonable sized house (current one is ~1700 sq ft) on a nice large lot (.5 acres) that backs up to a nice wooded city park within a 40 minute commute to work in the best school district in the state and a 2 hour drive to a 2.5 acre wooded lake lot with 200 feet of shore line that abuts just over 1000 acres of public land that is open to hunting. I have 13 years left to pay on the 15 year mortgage and own the lake lot outright, am saving for retirement and my children's college and can still afford nice things now and then. For places in the bay area and silicon valley I have told them I would need at least a quarter million a year if not much more. This also discounts what it would cost to have me deal with the special breed of California crazy, being packed in with a ton of other people, and that I would be living in a state that is being washed down hill, on fire, or dying of thirst.

Also, I hear that in Minnesota, there's a town where all the women are strong, all the men are good looking, and all the children are above average. (I've never had occasion to visit, but everyone I know who's been there or lived there loved it.)

That's also a reason why I encourage people to, if they're looking for a vacation, consider taking a train or road trip across the country. Do that once, and you'll understand why millions of people enjoy living in Kansas or Utah or New Mexico.

There is also the town of Garage Logic [wikipedia.org] as well.

I have never personally understood why someone would want to live in Kansas unless they were a farmer or did work related to farming but to each their own.
