The Independent reports:

Psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University Phillip Zimbardo (who led the team of researchers who conducted the Stanford Prison Experiment) has made the warnings, which form a major part of his latest book, Man (Dis)Connected.

Zimbardo says (in this TED talk) there is a "crisis" amongst young men, a high number of whom are experiencing a "new form of addiction" to excessive use of pornography and video games. Citing the research he and his team conducted for the book, he says: "It begins to change brain function. It begins to change the reward centre of the brain, and produces a kind of excitement and addiction."

An article from Psychology Today, however, argues that there are no demonstrable scientific links between porn consumption and the disputed phenomenon called 'Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction.'

Could this problem be manifesting itself as the rise of the Hikikomori?

I get the distinct impression that this affects more than just "some" young Japanese men. Based on all of the information available, it's a very widespread problem that would be described as far beyond just "some" being affected.

But not only young japanese men watch porn or play videogames, I think the problematic there is more in tune with the expectations of japanese society "work, work harder and get a family" being so hard to accomplish in a country barely coming out of a depression, that they shut any social interaction, the only form of escapism left of course the internet. Or maybe I'm wrong and its something else, but I think "porn and videogames" is not a problem for most young males.

I don't think it's a societal problem. American society puts just as much, if not more, pressure on its students. Yet we don't see this problem anywhere near as bad in America as it is in Japan. Somebody suggested maybe anime is to blame. I would tend to agree.

You would tend to agree... based on absolutely zero actual evidence.

Maybe it's the rock & roll music. Maybe it's comic books. Maybe it's video games. Maybe it's... cartoons!

          Might be cartoon.
Japanese cartoons make men take a second looks at female children.
And in that second look they like what they see.

Real people are always physically ugly. Anime characters are simply superior in looks and personality.

That's perfectly alright, it's just darwinist elimination at work here. One can not reproduce with porn or a video game.

I wonder, why the troll moderation? There's nothing trollish about my comment, this is how things have worked since Ug the caveman. Traits that do not benefit survival of human race - avoiding potential mates in this case - simply end up not being propagated.

The moderation has been absolutely terrible here lately. You aren't alone. Anyone who posts anything mildly interesting is immediately downmoded with "Troll" or "Flamebait". I wish they'd just get rid of the moderation system. As it stands, I have to browse at -1 all of the time just to be able to read good comments that were incorrectly modded down.

Things haven't been so bad here until just a few days away. Did some recent article get attention of some propaganda group and put SN on their radar or something?
