The Independent reports:
Psychologist and professor emeritus at Stanford University Phillip Zimbardo (who led the team of researchers who conducted the Stanford Prison Experiment) has made the warnings, which form a major part of his latest book, Man (Dis)Connected.
Zimbardo says (in this TED talk) there is a "crisis" amongst young men, a high number of whom are experiencing a "new form of addiction" to excessive use of pornography and video games. Citing the research he and his team conducted for the book, he says: "It begins to change brain function. It begins to change the reward centre of the brain, and produces a kind of excitement and addiction."
An article from Psychology Today, however, argues that there are no demonstrable scientific links between porn consumption and the disputed phenomenon called 'Porn-Induced Erectile Dysfunction.'
Could this problem be manifesting itself as the rise of the Hikikomori?

The modding here is really atrocious today. I'm seeing all sorts of good comments here modded Flamebait, Troll, or Off-Topic when they clearly aren't.
It isn't just this topic, if course. This bad modding happens in most topics.
It really is time to name names. The name of the mod should be listed next to the moderation they gave. If it becomes obvious that somebody is modding abusively, they need to lose their ability to moderate.
All of these downmods are harming the discussion here. What's the point of having moderation if I have to always browse at -1 just to see all of the good comments that were wrongly downmodded?

If you start putting names, you will get wikipedia -> admins and users forming cabal, infighting etc. Basically, death of the community.

This community needs to hold moderators responsible for their actions. If somebody is moderating abusively, we should treat them like the shit that they are. Since they're harmful to the community, they should be driven away, or have their moderation privileges taken away. Abusive moderation is far more harmful to this community than anything else.

Good point. Idea: mods get a ID, or a gravatar, whatever, that is uncoupled from their name and UID. User can optionally upmod or downmod them. The effect is to change the weight of the moderations by that mod for the user. Optionally a global influence could be had but I see potential for mobbing.
I know, this means overhauling the mod system.

I would suggest browsing at -1 anyway. There are not really that many atrocious comments and they are quickly recognized and passed by. The anonymous cowards post at 0 and sometimes post worthwhile comments. You are probably losing as much as gaining by excluding lower rated comments.
