How would you like to work for the Free Software Foundation (FSF)? Now could be your chance! Get paid to write free software!

The FSF is looking for a full-time Web Developer with good knowledge of modern household names like MediaWiki, Plone/Zope and Drupal. The duties will be mostly related to 'back end' systems but also 'front end' experience is valued. The position is located in downtown Boston. Apply by Wednesday, May 27th.

ps. If that was not your kettle of fish, perhaps one of these might be https://www.fsf.org/resources/jobs/listing

4 weeks paid vacation is nice, but still, $51.6K doesn't go far in Boston. Sounds like they're looking either for a retireee with a few million USD in the bank, or someone fresh out of college with a liberal arts degree.

They should allow telecommuting. You will attract a larger pool of talent that is willing to make less money for the benefits of telecommuting. You would think the FSF would be open to distributed software development.

The issues of free software and telecommuting are orthogonal; one can be a big supporter of one but not the other, or support both or neither.

I think most managers and developers have been burned more than once working with a telecommuter whose remoteness became an obstacle to team productivity.

Fresh out of college, probably. Liberal arts degree I doubt. That's really not a terrible salary. It's not *great*, and I'd certainly expect more if you've got a few years of industry experience, but it's a solid salary for a new developer.

I live in Providence and work in Woonsocket, so that's within a reasonable commuting distance from Boston. Quite a few of my coworkers do live in Boston...but yeah, those are the management folks, you probably do need six figures (or close to it) to actually live *IN* Boston. But you could certainly get a nice large apartment somewhere within walking distance of Boston public transit (my current apartment would actually be just about perfect if you can handle a one hour -- on the train with free wifi -- commute.) I see no reason you wouldn't be able to live quite comfortably on that salary. You won't be buying a brand new BMW, but you could certainly afford the necessities and a few small luxuries while still putting away a decent amount of savings too.

Of course, this also assumes you're fortunate enough to not have massive debts to pay off. That could be an issue. Might need a roommate if you do, but you could probably get by with just one roommate in a 2 bedroom apartment so that's not bad.

If only I was more into web dev...
