AlterNet reports:

Illinois governor Bruce Rauner watched his anti-union bill called, "Right-To-Work", die a swift, cruel death in the House [May 14]. [...] The the tally [PDF] was 0 yes votes, 72 no votes, and 37 voting present.

Fun with math: The Illinois House has 118 members.

A handful of Republicans went for a walk during the vote, not publicly falling on one side or another.

...good in theory. rarely if ever works out that way though

anyone care to point out a union that didn't/doesn't operate like the mafia?

if a union with any significant amount of bargaining power doesn't drive a business under, it will drive a business out of town/country

the idea of collective bargaining is ok since many companies would have no qualms about screwing their employees into the ground, but when a union turns into the very same kind of corporation that they claim to be fighting it kinda loses all meaning

unionism tends to point out a simple if uncomfortable truth... if companies can find cheaper labor elsewhere, you were probably being paid too much in the first place. you can argue about quality, efficiency, etc, but at the end of the day what matters is your tangible value, and many first-world employees just aren't worth what they're being paid (hence why companies move to places like china).

employees in china aren't slaves. they just get paid less because their standard of living is lower (much lower in some cases). but the huge discrepancy only proves how unsustainable the standard of living in first-world countries really is.
if you wanna earn a high wage and beat chinese labor, you must offer something that chinese labor cannot. otherwise you are really worth no more than chinese labor, regardless of whether you think its fair or not.

capitalism is competitive, but at least the cream rises to the top. in socialism everyone is dragged kicking and screaming to the bottom.

The unions in Germany are more partner-like, looking to keep the company alive and sustainable rather than the antagonistic relationship typical of American unions.

anyone care to point out a union that didn't/doesn't operate like the mafia?

(you mean doesn't operate the same as the corporations do it as well, except the corps are doing it "legally" but lobbying for deregulation)

    Here's an example [ch-aviation.com].

Remember that articles about the Finland's educational [soylentnews.org] wonder?
You can find there [hechingerreport.org] another example for what you asked

The Hechinger Report: What roles do teacher unions play in Finland? In the U.S. right now, unions are seen as a big problem standing in the way of reform. What’s it like in Finland?

Virkkunen [Finland's education minister] : It’s a totally different situation in Finland. For me, as Minister of Education, our teachers’ union has been one of the main partners because we have the same goal: we all want to ensure that the quality of education is good, and we are working very much together with the union. Nearly every week we are in discussions with them. They are very powerful in Finland. Nearly all of the teachers are members. I think we don’t have big differences in our thinking. They are very good partners for us.

You have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.
You swallowed way too much Cold War bullshit.

Communism worked in North America for hundreds of years before white folks showed up (The Iroquois).
...and that was working hundreds and hundreds of years before Marx every scribbled a line.

It worked, again, for hundreds of years starting before there was a USA.
(If it wasn't for the religion/celibacy thing, I'm sure they would still have a bunch of huge thriving communist communities today.)

The Iroquois were NOT communists. Have you ever read their constitution? Try it - http://www.ratical.org/many_worlds/6Nations/ [ratical.org] Fact is, some of our own founding fathers admired the Iroquois so much, that they worked to model OUR constitution on theirs.

Now, kindly stop blathering about the tribes of which you have no understanding.

        Communism isn't a governmental system.
        It's an economic system.
Pointing to a constitution shows that you don't have a clue.

your definition of communism is probably as revisionist as your definition of capitalism

newsflash: michael moore is an idiot!
