The Washington Post reports:

A dollar bill is a special kind of thing. You can keep it as long as you like. You can pay for things with it. No one will ever charge you a fee. No one will ask any questions about your credit history. And other people won't try to tell you that they know how to spend that dollar better than you do.

For these reasons, cash is one of the most valuable resources a poor person in the United States can possess. Yet legislators in Kansas, not trusting the poor to use their money wisely, have voted to limit how much cash that welfare beneficiaries can receive, effectively reducing their overall benefits, as well.

The legislature placed a daily cap of $25 on cash withdrawals beginning July 1, which will force beneficiaries to make more frequent trips to the ATM to withdraw money from the debit cards used to pay public assistance benefits.

Since there's a fee for every withdrawal, the limit means that some families will get substantially less money.

I've seen welfare recipients driving MBZs buy lobster, steak, and other fancy foods with food stamps. Then others who sell their stamps to buy drugs or booze.

Was the MBZ used or new?

    Was the lobster on sale?

Should we require anyone on public assistance to sell all of their possession, wear sack cloth, subsisting only on gruel? Maybe we can require that they never have anything nice ever until they've paid back their debt to society?

Perhaps we could beat them on a daily basis until the demons of poorness have been driven from their bodies?

And being a bigot towards them really gets them to change their minds? Am I right? If you could just be a bigger jerk maybe they would listen to you.

I might be able to take you seriously if the government of Kansas wasn't bankrupt do to Republicans' inability to accept that they are wrong and that their policies actually have the opposite of the intended effect.

I took stamps when in college as a kind of education grant. Ate more steak than any other time of my life. The amount they gave us was ridiculously large but not the max possible. The program is administered very poorly and the benefits abused. If you don't have a plan to break out you will become a slave to the system.

Depending on when he did that and where he lived that would be very doable if you skipped other meals.

In my area a 1lb ribeye is 10-15 each and can be split into 2 meals. Where my parents live? Its about 5-10 each. Better if you catch it on sale.

Not a very balanced diet. But doable.

The point is that it is not a valid criticism of food assistance programs, not that it is technically possible to choose to spend more on red meat when on food stamps than when soluble.

Perfectly legal where I live. Hell, the local pot store has better prices than the street dealers, clean store, nice selection, tested THC levels, and bitchin' sales.

Bet you'd be okay it they bought alcohol with it wouldn't you?
