Microsoft has confirmed that Windows 10 will be released globally—for PCs and tablets only—on July 29 as a free upgrade for anyone running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1.

You have one year from July 29 to get your free upgrade to Windows 10, after which Microsoft will "continue to keep it current for the supported lifetime of the device—at no cost." There's no word on what the "supported lifetime" actually is, but it's probably some loose wording to prevent Microsoft from falling into the same trap as Windows XP. The company likely doesn't want to support Windows 10 on devices that are 10, 15 years old.

The annunciatory blog post, penned by operating system chief Terry Myerson, is light on any further details. There's no guidance on the release date for Windows 10 Mobile, and it isn't clear how many of the seven Windows 10 SKUs will be released on July 29.

I've been stuck with a Win8 machine, and regretted it as much as I thought I would. Even fewer of my games work with it that did with Win7. So (one of) my big question(s) now as to whether to take this upgrade is, will this help that, stay the same, or make it worse? "Compatibility Mode" my ass.

Also, MS offering anything for free makes me nervous. Why?

Appears that it is only free if you already paid! Brilliant! Finally come out with the patch for Vista, call it a new version, but then update your angry users for free! So, still need authentication from RedMordor central, then? Strange definition of "free", not charging for fixing the defects in the original product.

Windows Vista isn't currently on the slate for free upgrades.

Yeah, I know. The point I was trying to make was that . . . . well, let's just forget it, OK?

Windows 10 can't be any worse than Windows 8. In fact it may very well be an improvement. Unless you're already used to the horror that is metro. The one thing that I find annoying is that they have their app store built-in and it's not in an inconspicuous place. It's right there in the Windows Menu. That is also effectively pushing you to sign-in / register with your Hotmail / Live / Windows E-mail Account. People will be a lot more likely to give Windows 10 a shot, if they can upgrade their broken Win8 design to a usable Win10 design for free. As opposed to just getting an Apple instead when they buy their next computer. Average consumer has no idea what makes ChromeOS tick. I would guess a poll asking what Operating System ChromeOS ran on, you would get a whole lot of people answering Windows. Even though it's based on the Linux Kernel the average user doesn't know what a "Linux" is. Did you mean Lynx? = Furry Cat as opposed to the other Lynx.
