[Update 2]: A revised frontend proxy is nearly operational and ready to go into service which will resolve performance issues for firefox

I looked up roko's basilisk a week ago, because of that signature. Roko's basilisk, is the name of a hypothetical future AI, with enough computing resources to simulate all human consciousness of the present era. And, Roko's basilisk might decide to selectively punish misbehaving users to support itself.
The fun part of that argument, is that from inside a simulation, you can't tell whether you're inside a simulation or in the real world. Perhaps in reality, you already died 500 years ago, and what you think is real, including yourself, is just a simulation.
What I see as a flaw in that argument, is that the rules of the simulation, can not be broken. Roko's basilisk wouldn't be capable of roundhouse kicking you in the head once a day for punishment. In my eyes, the most that Roko's basilisk is capable of doing, is making some undectable, almost single-atom, tweaks to some butterfly neurons on the opposite side of the world, so that a butterfly flaps it's wings, and 10 years later (simulation time), your life is hell.
Or in short, if Roko's basilisk hates you, then murphy's law is always true for you. Less scary than the original phrasing, right ?

Why not? The simulation can take any form and any rules the AI desires.
It's a stupid argument anyway, because anything the AI does to you or your copies in the future won't have any effect on the past.

If we're in your simulation, we're not in my simulation.
Lotsa rules have been measured to extremely high precision. Conservation of energy, conservation of momentum, conservation of electric charge, stability of constants over time. Recently, the fine structure constant was determined to stay constant, within 16 or 17 decimal places, over the span of a year. http://physics.aps.org/articles/v7/117 [aps.org]
If rules were constantly being broken on a macroscopic scale just because Roko's basilisk hates someone, it wouldn't be possible in the first place, to measure anything to 16 decimal places of accuracy.

The idea doesn't state that we're in one of these torture-chamber simulations now, but that we'll be resurrected as a simulation to be tortured in the future if we don't do enough to help create Roko's Basilisk now, in what (for want of a better term) we call reality.
If rules were constantly being broken on a macroscopic scale just because Roko's basilisk hates someone, it wouldn't be possible in the first place, to measure anything to 16 decimal places of accuracy.
