from the Budget-Fair-Queueing-AKA-getting-in-line-at-a-cheap-carnival? dept.

For years the BFQ (Budget Fair Queueing) I/O scheduler has been trying to get in the mainline kernel and it looks like they have an action plan for getting accepted upstream.

BFQ is a proportional-share I/O scheduler that shares a lot of code with the CFQ scheduler. The Completely Fair Queuing (CFQ) scheduler has long been part of the mainline tree but BFQ hasn't been pulled yet even after many revisions and code reviews. Despite that, it is used as a default I/O scheduler on several Linux distributions, such as Manjaro, OpenMandriva, Sabayon, or CyanoGenMod, for some devices.

While it doesn't look like it will be ready for the upcoming Linux 4.2 cycle, it appears BFQ getting accepted is becoming quite close (a Google Groups link).

I think this it's hilarious that on Slashdot, their "top" story is some SJW bullshit about "men want women out of science labs", and yet Soylent News has an actual Linux-related story.

I was about to throw in a really good System D offtopic post here, but out of respect for your awesomeness, I will refrain.

But seriously, I'll bet kernel scheduling is on Pottering's radar...

In all honesty, I've not liked the direction the kernel has been going as of late, and combined with the "core stack" (defined as start of userland to bash) getting so bloated, I'm seriously considering dumping Linux entirely aside from the gaming rig. Having worked with a major Linux corporation for six years prior to resigning last August has given me a view that this shit isn't going to get better.

The SN servers all run Ubuntu 14.04 aside from Beryllium (which is CentOS), and at some point, I think a serious discussion is going to be had on which ship we abandon to. I'm pushing to replace our LDAP infrastructure with Hesiod, and we already use kerberos which is well supported by basically everything. The two realistic options from where I'm sitting is one of the illumos descendants (which itself is a descendent of OpenSolaris), or FreeBSD.

(despite its reputation for security, OpenBSD doesn't have an equivalent of AppArmor/SELinux or jails, which makes it a non-starter)

That's still a real [bbc.com] story [theregister.co.uk]. It didn't appear from thin air.

As a relative newcomer to soylent, but a long-time slashdotter, I have to say:

Too bad we have stupid posters who whine about "SJW"... I for one am glad SN isn't some incestuous sausage fest.

It's always the same with your crowd: Don't be dissatisfied with the people who say you're the most racist, bigoted, sexist, close-minded scum on the planet. If you try to come to an understanding and not blindly supplicate, you're part of the problem.
