According to an announcement by Voat administrator Atko, HostEurope.de has shut down the servers of Reddit alternative Voat on the grounds of Voat hosting "political [sic] incorrect" content. This was done without warning and without reference to any specific content. Voat has since moved to CloudFlare.

takyon: CloudFlare is displaying Error 520 for the site, so here are some other articles about Voat:

From VentureBeat:

"Our hosting provider, hosteurope.de, has terminated all our contracts and shut down all our servers without issuing a warning or trying to talk to us," wrote Atko. "This includes my private server which was only used to host my girlfriend's blog. She is a scientist. She published her research papers on that blog (preformatted papers to which she owns the copyright). That server contained no other data whatsoever."

Atko says the only reasons he was given by the host were: "We have received significant information that the content on your server includes political incorrect parts that are unacceptable for us" and "we cannot keep bond of trust to you as our customer."

Or perhaps a decentralized discussion network, using store-and-forward such as to make a full copy of discussions on all servers involved. And let's let any user opt to host their own server so as to add to the network. We could even call it "The User's Network", or perhaps just "Usenet" for short.

      I know :D

Point is however that I have some doubt that it would work because people are now used to moderation by policy rather than killfiles, server and thus users would be liable to "hosted content", various creepy organizations would map users, anonymity would likely not really exist, impersonation could be rampant and so on. One should not forget that it previously was only possible for educated people involved in research to even access these servers, let alone for the discussion forums them self. The core idea is however really good. These P2P networks seems interesting but seems kind of like the wrong tool for the job?

Another funny tidbit is that people invented http, and said servers. Then they discovered it would be need to have an automatic feed from them, like rss. Then someone figured, hey that's just like nntp. GOTO 10 ;)

The future of free expression has to go freenet/gnunet over mesh networks? then the nazis are not the ones chatting on forums.
I am all for free expression with non free consequences for it. Say what you want and let me label you a moron for it. Everybody wins.
