Late last year the UK Government legalized copying for private use, a practice which many citizens already believed to be legal.

But now several music industry organizations in the UK have won a judicial review which renders the government's decision to allow copying for personal use unlawful. According to the High Court, there's insufficient evidence to prove that the legislation doesn't hurt musicians and the industry at large.

Technollama, a really great UK IP/copyright/etc. law blog has a great summary of the decision and what happened and just how freaking stupid this was. (He has typically very insightful posts. Definitely worth a subscription if you're interested in ip and copyright law... no I don't work for him! ;-) )

I've been pretty careful to try and support musicians throughout the years and stopped torrenting quite a while ago, but these fuckers (execs, not musicians) just won't quit! They are so greedy. I'm tempted to go back to torrenting and then just paypal musicians directly to cut these assholes out of the equation. I already rarely download from iTunes if I can help it since Bandcamp gets more money to the musicians.
