A client of mine does the payroll for his small business and has thus far used various versions of Intuit's Quickbooks. While he can manage to muddle around with programs and do things, computers are still very much magic boxes to him and he had the malware to prove it. I'm doing everything remotely, so I would like to switch him to a simple Linux desktop but the problem is Quickbooks doesn't have a Linux client and the web version of their app is unusable. I've looked into Linux financial software (e.g. gnucash) but I can't seem to find anything that does payroll and accounts for U.S. state and federal payroll taxes. Does anyone use payroll software for Linux that they can recommend?

For our business I've been using GnuCash for accounting, and I really like it. However, it doesn't have a payroll module. Originally I did payroll with a spreadsheet but it was a PITA keeping up with changing tax rates and what not. I tried Intuit's online payroll service but found it was absolutely awful--it refused to calculate local taxes correctly and I couldn't find a way to manually add them. Their tech support was available by phone only and was outsourced. Maybe their other products are okay, but I would not recommend them at all. I've been using Wave payroll, another online service, and despite some minor quirks it just simply works, and their tech support is prompt and helpful. They charge by the number of employees you have, so if he has a lot he might just want to outsource to a local accountant. We have 4 employees and we usually pay $21 a month.
