A client of mine does the payroll for his small business and has thus far used various versions of Intuit's Quickbooks. While he can manage to muddle around with programs and do things, computers are still very much magic boxes to him and he had the malware to prove it. I'm doing everything remotely, so I would like to switch him to a simple Linux desktop but the problem is Quickbooks doesn't have a Linux client and the web version of their app is unusable. I've looked into Linux financial software (e.g. gnucash) but I can't seem to find anything that does payroll and accounts for U.S. state and federal payroll taxes. Does anyone use payroll software for Linux that they can recommend?

someone said it above already but it warrants repeating

your client is paying you to solve a problem. if the problem is malware, set up an isolated machine for running accounting software that he is comfortable using and give him some pointers about what might be causing the malware infestation.

if all you do is change the way he has to do his job to make your job easier, why the fuck would he bother continuing to pay you?

outsourcing payroll doesn't seem like a bad idea, but if some IT fixit asshole came to me and told me how to run my business, i would probably tell him to fuck off and never come back.

one of the things i hate most about IT professionals is their obsession with trying to force problems into existing pigion holed solutions (fuck you SAP!). if you're paid to come up with a solution to fit a business, don't go trying to change the business to fit your preferrred solution. if you can't do that for the price, then admit it, learn and move on. a small/medium business owner might not be as smart as you with computers, but there's a good chance they know more about how to succeed in their own business than you do.
