Microsoft plans to announce a major new round of layoffs as early as Wednesday, as the company seeks to further cut costs in a shifting technology landscape.

The layoffs are in addition to the about 18,000 employees that Microsoft said it planned to let go a year ago, according to people briefed on the plans, who asked for anonymity because the details were confidential. The new job cuts are expected to affect people in Microsoft's hardware group, among other parts of the company, including the struggling smartphone business that it acquired from Nokia last year in a $7.2 billion deal.
...
In June, Microsoft said it was selling its online display advertising business to AOL, as the company exited a business for which it once had high hopes.

Another area in which Microsoft is stumbling is smartphones, a market in which it has continued to lose market share since acquiring Nokia's handset business. Microsoft has so far failed to turn the Windows Phone operating system, which runs on its handsets, into a vibrant alternative to the two leading mobile platforms, iOS from Apple and Android from Google.

How do you read the tea leaves, Soylent? What does the future hold for Microsoft?

Ironic that you should bring up the Ballmernator as Yahoo Tech News is calling this Ballmer’s Final Blunder [yahoo.com]. I have said it before and I'll say it again, history will look upon Ballmer with the same disdain the pepsi guy at Apple got and it will be completely apropos. Ballmer was the absolute worst kind of CEO, the kind that simply looked at what Forbes said was hot and said "us too!"without having a single clue WHY the hot thing was hot!

Here is just a few of his almost endless list of failures off the top of my head and boy did he have some doozys, Forcing the X360 out before the RRoD was resolved (costing the company over 2 billion), rushing Vista to market while kissing Intel's behind (which created the "Vista capable" debacle), hell the man even snatched defeat from the jaws of victory by killing a growing digital market in playsforsure for a bad iTunes knockoff with Zune market, sinking a ton of money in a buggy, poorly supported gaming platform (GFWL) that ended up costing game sales as customers quickly spread the word about how badly it ran, The Kin and Sidekick which was just money flushed down the shitter....hell i could go on all day.

While Nadella has so far not given me any confidence (the waffling on Win 10 licensing is pure Ballmer levels of stupid) but he'd have to suck like a Hoover upright 24/7 for the rest of this decade and he STILL wouldn't reach the pinnacle of shit that was Steve Ballmer. TFA is just yet another example of Ballmer copying Apple and Google without any kind of business plan beyond....well copying Apple and Google.

They took FIVE YEARS to get Longhorn/Visduh out the door--and even then they had to strip out anything new because they couldn't get it working.

MICROS~1's fourth-rate technologists share plenty of the blame on that one.

Nope, sorry, THAT WAS BALLMER as the ORIGINAL Longhorn (which you have never seen unless you have downloaded the alpha floating around) was coming along okay but was gonna take another year and a half to 2 years...what did Ballmer do? Made them throw out the whole thing and take 2K3 server and build the Longhorn GUI (and DRM, Ballmer never met DRM he didn't love) which added another 2 years....which was what the Longhorn team needed in the first place!

So if you want to know why Vista sucked? It was 2K3 with a bunch of DRM and GUI crap from a completely different OS bolted on in less than 24 months, and that was 100% Ballmer's doing.
