AT&T is promising to offer cheaper Internet service to poor people if it's allowed to buy DirecTV. This is similar to a promise that helped Comcast gain government approval of its 2011 acquisition of NBCUniversal.

Qualifying residents in areas where AT&T's top speeds are below 5 Mbps (that's not a typo) will be offered DSL service of "up to 1.5 Mbps, where available" for $10 a month, AT&T said in a filing with the Federal Communications Commission last week. It'll be $5 a month for the first year before rising to $10 for the next three years. AT&T is proposing a four-year commitment in total.

In areas where AT&T's top speeds are higher, the company said it "will offer a broadband wireline DSL service at speeds up to 5 Mbps to households in AT&T's wireline footprint for $10 per month for the first 12 months of service (rising to $20 per month for the remainder of the term of the commitment)."

9-1-1 emergency dispatch. What are you reporting?

Illegal fireworks. It's like a combat zone here.

I'm sorry I cant hear you do you have a landline?

I'm not at home because I was hoping to get a good cell signal.

AT&T worked great until July 2010 but I guess they upgraded their cell tower because it stopped working suddenly - overnight. Ive tried several brands of phones and a 3g ipad. However I can send SMS if I stand up and hold my iphone up by the ceiling.

I reported this repeatedly. Always they text to thank me for helping AT&T improve its service but then AT&T does not improve its service.

    Works fine fifty yards away.

Fireworks are not an emergency unless you're shooting them from a fifty foot pile of dry mulch.

That's not what they mean by emergency. Emergencies are things that have to be dealt with right now. Usually there's a threat to life or limb, but not always. If there's a law being broken that needs immediate attention, you call 911 and the operator will handle it or tell you that it's not necessary.

In the case of fireworks, it could well be something to call 911 about, it requires an immediate response and in drought effected parts of the country it could easily get out of hand quite quickly.

But in general, don't call 911 unless it is important.

Clark County 9-1-1 received more than 1,000 fireworks complaints. Some joker not only burned down his own home but his neighbor's as well.

The law on the books does not permit the fire marshall to declare an emergency fireworks ban. The huge oubluc outcry quite likely will result in a county ordinance that grants him that authority. Im going to start attending county council meetings so I can speak to the counsellors in its support.

The councillor for my district is obviously on the take, The Columbian lampoons Din Madore damn near every day. I myself am not so shy about speaking my mind.
